Scottsdale Boys & Girls Club closes after nearly 50 years - azcentral.com

The Rose Lane branch of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale closed its doors last week. 8, 1966, to 100 girls as the first permanent Scottsdale Girls Club. The club welcomed boys when two organizations merged in June 1992, chartered as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Scottsdale. The decision to close Rose Lane and sell the property was a result of the building’s age, needed repairs and the cost of building a new clubhouse, said Jim Stratton, past president and CEO and the current interim CEO. “It would have been around $3 million to build a new club,” Stratton said. Notices went out to families, and staff worked this summer to relocate children to the club’s Barker and Piper branches. With the closing of Rose Lane, Stratton said, more space has been picked up at the Paiute Neighborhood Center, which was an outreach location. In an agreement with the city, the youth programs now sponsored by the city will be administered by the BGCS and Paiute will be chartered as a full-fledged Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Scottsdale branch. Friday includes Stories for Youth (10 a. m. ) at Carnegie Library Lecture Hall, Oakland, and workshops (1 and 3 p. m. ) for all levels of experience as well as a Storytelling Senior Lunch (noon) at the Depreciation Lands Museum, Hampton. Evening performances begin at 7 at Winchester-Thurston School, North Campus, Hampton, with the Liars Contest and the national tellers Opening Concert. Saturday will be a full day of stories starting at 10 a. m. and ending with the national tellers final concert, Story Scrum and ghost stories at Winchester-Thurston.
