WATKINS GLEN — Jeff Gordon first raced at Watkins Glen International in 1991 when he was driving Busch cars for Bill Davis Racing. The first place we went after our arrival at the Glen was the garage area. Expecting a long line of mediatypes we were surprised to find Jeff standing alone next to his Ford Thunderbird with no other reporters in sight. He was, at that time, still running sprint cars full-time and racing stock cars whenever he could. That was his first trip to the Glen and my first interview there. He would go on to win three in a row at The Glen (1996-98). Jeff would finish first again in 2001. He was second to Tony Stewart’s five wins with four as he started Sunday’s Cheez-It 355. Despite that success, his 14-year winless drought since... Still, his confidence had to be buoyed by his fastest overall final practice time and his fifth-place starting position on the starting grid. He would have to pass and stay ahead of drivers like pole-sitter and defending race champion A. J. Almendinger, second-place starter Martin Truex, all-time Glen Cup race winner Tony Stewart in the third slot and points leader Kevin Harvick in the... Während der wiederbelebte Chevrolet Camaro auf Anhieb erfolgreich war, konnte der neu aufgelegte Ford Thunderbird nicht überzeugen und brachte es nie auf die erwarteten Stückzahlen. So werden bei General Motors die beiden Pickups Colorado und Canyon nach einer kurzen Pause in die Modellpalette zurückkommen. According to Ford’s website , the initial plans for a T-Bird featured: “A two-passenger, canvas-topped open car that ‘would make maximum use of standard production components. Check out Ford’s most iconic cars and trucks. Ford says the model broke the mold of boxy sedans, creating a worldwide shift in car design. It may not be a “classic,” but the Taurus got Americans to continue buying Ford in a flailing American car industry. GT: In 2004, Ford unveiled the GT as their premium sports car, inspired by the GT40 race cars that were popular in the world’s oldest endurance sports car race “24 Hours of Le Mans” from 1966 to 1969. Luckily, this model was three inches taller... You know, so people could actually get into it. Sadly, the Ford GT was only produced for two short years. Alden “Gib” Giberson, a young stylist for Ford offered the winning name, Thunderbird. A southwest native, Giberson said he took the name from the Thunderbird of Native American mythology.
