Six Valley women arrested in connection to theft of state benefits - Monitor

The women, who come from Edinburg, Pharr and McAllen, are accused of stealing assistance funds from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, and Medicaid, the complaints state. SNAP provides nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families, and provides economic benefits to communities, according to the Texas Health and Human Services website. Of the six women, Perez gained the most in benefits after she received more than $12,000 in SNAP benefits and more than $88,000 in excessive Medicaid benefits during a nearly four-year period starting July 2011, according to a complaint. State officials claim Perez provided false information to the health commission when she listed that only herself and two children were living in her home when her husband, who had an income, had also been living there, the complaint states. He spent 17 years as a salesman for H & H Coffee, Boggus Ford and Clark Chevrolet before being elected an Hidalgo County justice of the peace in 1965, serving until 1985. Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez said he knew of Garcia... “Judge Garcia was a true public servant to the county and to the community for all the years that he served,” Rodriguez said. Those condolences were echoed by 398th state District Judge Aida Salinas-Flores, who said she’ll always remember her interactions with Garcia with fondness. A McAllen High School graduate, Garcia also served on the McAllen school board for nine years as vice president and secretary. He also served as president and director of the McAllen Ex-Students Association, an organization of former McAllen High School students who raise funds for the school. He coached youth baseball in McAllen and was also instrumental in establishing the Southern Little League Association of McAllen. Along with more than 50 years of public service, Garcia was also a member of many social organizations including the Elks Club, Kiwanis Club of McAllen, the Mission-McAllen Beef Syndicate and the Tripa Club.
