Charges filed against driver in fatal church bus crash - WTHR

Charles Goodman, 53, of Gary, was charged last Thursday (July 30) with reckless homicide and driving while suspended. If convicted, Goodman could face a possible term of one to six years. Six-year-old Jacob Williams was killed in the Hancock County crash , and several others were injured, including Goodman. Investigators claim Goodman was asleep at the wheel and had no recollection of the crash. Late Thursday afternoon, a Hancock Superior court judge signed off on criminal charges: one felony count of reckless homicide an a single misdemeanor of driving while suspended. Just after 4:00 pm Tuesday afternoon, the 1999 Ford F-450 Econoline 15-passenger vehicle was traveling from Gary to Dayton when it veered off I-70, struck a tree, and split open. "He had a suspended driver’s license and a terrible driving record. And if he had not operated the vehicle recklessly by swerving off the road, striking a tree and having an accident, no one would have been injured," said Eaton. A passenger told investigators he thought something was "off" with Goodman that from the time he got on the bus, and Goodman seemed unfocused - as if he was under the influence of a narcotic drug.
