Tulsa grandmother and teenage grandson team up to learn to swim - Tulsa World

Gina Miller Kinnison, chief operating officer of her family’s Miller Swim School, offers advice on swimming. Kids need a "healthy fear" of the water but not be afraid to go near it. They must know they have to have an adult with them at all times. Sign your child or yourself up for swim lessons. It takes a long time to teach swimmers how to swim correctly and be prepared for all sorts of situations that can occur in a pool, at the lake or in other situations. Kids (and adults) need to know more than just how to move through the water — like breath control, rolling onto their back to be able to breathe, etc. Abide by this safety rule: Reach, throw, but never go. That means if somebody in the water is in trouble, do not jump in after them. Read the label and don’t use if it says “not to be used for safety purposes. " Use a certified life jacket properly fitted to the swimmer so they can’t flip upside down and be unable to right themselves in the water. Don’t assume your child will remember the dos and don’t taught in a summer swimming class over the winter. Swim lessons are available for ages 6 months to adults from a variety of Tulsa locations.
