FORD'S VEHICLE GETS MIXED RESULTS. THAT STORY TOPS OUR NEWS AT 11:00. THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY HAS MIXED REVIEW ON THE NEW ALUMINUM FORD F150 PICKUP TRUCK. ACCORDING TO THIS REPORT, THEY'RE TALKING 26% MORE IN REPAIR COSTS. BUT FORD, THEY SAY THAT'S NOT ACCURATE. HAS CONSISTENTLY RECEIVED TOP SAFETY RATINGS, BUT EVALUATIONS JUST RELEASED BY THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY WERE MIXED FOR THE CREW CAB AND EXTENDED CAB MODELS OF THE NEW ALUMINUM FORD F150. THE CREW CAB WAS A FULL SIZED BACK SEAT... THE EXTENDED CAB COMPACT BACK SEAT. IT HAS EXTRA FRAME COMPONENTS AND THEY'RE NOT PRESENT ON THE EXTENDED CAB VERSION. REPRESENTATIVES FROM FORD SAY BECAUSE THIS IS A NEW TEST. THIS CURRENT TESTING THAT IHS IS USING, THAT TEST DIDN'T COME INTO PLAY UNTIL HALFWAY THROUGH F150s DEVELOPMENT. A KEY FINDING CAME IN THE FENDER BENDER TEST, FOUND REPAIR COSTS FOR DAMAGED TRUCKS WERE 26% HIGHER FOR THE ALUMINUM VERSION VERSES THE OUTGOING STEEL BODY. FORD SAID THAT'S NOT ACCURATE. WE LOOK AT REAL WORLD REPAIR COSTS FOR THE 2015F150 TO DATE, THEY'RE COMPARABLE TO OR LESS THAN OTHER FULL SIZE PICKUPS, AVERAGING $69 LESS TO REPAIR. To qualify as a Top Safety Pick, cars must earn a strong grade in the Institute’s “small overlap” crash test and meet the Institute’s standards for moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and roof strength tests. IIHS awards the Top Safety Pick+ designation to vehicles that meet this criteria and have an “advanced” or “superior” front crash prevention system, which means vehicles must be able to stop or slow down without any assistance from the driver at... 2015 Buick Encore (Top Safety Pick): The Encore is the first Buick to qualify for an award with IIHS since 2013. It made the cut after improvements were made to the structure for “better small overlap front protection,” a test in which one quarter... 2016 Kia Sorento (Top Safety Pick): The 2015 Kia Sorento received a “poor” rating for its small overlap front crash test, but moved it up to “good” for its 2016 model.
