On Saturday, Newport News Shipbuilding will hold a keel-laying ceremony for USS John F. Kennedy , the second of the Gerald Ford -class carriers. About five more super-carriers, though over time, as he was careful to stress at a Republican Party forum in South Carolina on Monday. Cutting the carrier fleet has occupied most of that sort of discussion recently, but let’s also consider how feasible expanding it might be. Building a bunch more Fords would take decades, but the Navy could get some smaller ships much more quickly. Between 1968 and 2009, Newport News built, and the Navy commissioned, ten Nimitz -class carriers—about one every four years. The Navy currently buys one every five years. Just about everyone at Huntington Ingalls Industries would be delighted to return to the faster building rate, but that’s still just an extra ship every twenty years. At that pace, the Navy would graduate back from 10 to 15 carriers, Fords or follow-ons, in about a century. To further illustrate the challenge of what Kasich is recommending, consider doubling the current rate of super-carrier construction. Either way, super-carriers aren’t Liberty Ships, so they can only be built so fast. Source: nationalinterest.org

Ford F-150 gets mixed crash test results - CBS News

DETROIT - Ford's ( F ) new aluminum-sided F-150 pickup saw mixed results in new crash tests by the insurance industry, and the damaged trucks cost more to repair than steel-bodied ones. The four-door Super Crew version of the 2015 F-150 got top ratings in all five of the crash tests performed by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. But the Super Cab version, which has a smaller rear door and back seat, did poorly in a small front overlap test, which slams 25 percent of the front of the truck into a barrier at 40 miles per hour. The Insurance Institute also said it took longer for a local Ford dealer to repair the aluminum truck than an older steel one, and the aluminum parts cost more. But the company said it will make a design change in the 2016 model year to improve the crash performance of the Super Cab and Regular Cab models. Ford said the Super Crew -- which got the top safety award -- accounts for 83 percent of all F-150 sales. The Super Cab makes up around 12 percent and the Regular Cab accounts for 5 percent. Ford spokesman Mike Levine also said independent consultants have shown that average repair costs for the new truck are less than for the old truck. Source: www.cbsnews.com

First, Aston Martin stretched its well-known coupe shape, added a couple of doors, and the Rapide sedan was born. Then, in acknowledgment of legislative and environmental pressures, the luxury marque took the unusual step of re-trimming a prosaic Toyota/Scion iQ mini car, calling it the Aston Martin Cygnet overseas. That ugly duckling failed spectacularly, but the pressures for the UK firm to offer a more eco-friendly car remains, and now comes word that the British auto maker is planning an electrifying response: an 800-horsepower, battery-powered version of... That's because Aston Martin's current range of V-8 and V-12 luxury cars will have trouble meeting global emissions and fuel economy legislation unless those gas-guzzling models are offset by the introduction of much cleaner offerings. What's more, it won't be Aston's only electric model -- a battery-powered version of its forthcoming DBX sports SUV is also in the cards.
