The four-door share of light-duty-pickup sales has zoomed from zero in 1999 to half of all light-duties sold today. These trucks, also called "half-tons," are full-sizers meant for ordinary use, everything from delivering refrigerators and towing bass boats to standing tall on Saturday night in the honky-tonk parking lot. After an eight-year run on the previous version, Chevy's new Silverado arrived last autumn just in time to host late-season tailgate parties. Ford has been the perennial top-seller in this class. Its current F-150 was all-new in 2004, and it earned a place in our 5Best Trucks pantheon in '04, '05, and '06. The full-dress FX4 SuperCrew for this test weighs in at $40,650 with leather and the largest-available, 300-hp V-8. Pickups may be as... The defending Titan SE reporting in for this test, at $39,005, is the only truck of the group to duck under 40 grand as tested. From Dodge we have a Ram, as red as a fire truck — would you believe Flame Red. Like the F-150 and the Titan, the Ram carries over into 2007 with few changes from last year. The new Silverado offers two different interiors, what Chevy calls the "pure pickup" layout, with a 40/20/40 split-bench front seat, or the luxurious LTZ bucket-seat package shared with the Tahoe SUV. Above it, only stunted pines barely cling to rocks and physical activity becomes hard work. It looks tough, the rocks and low shrubs and ancient, stunted pines, but what flora there is grows incredibly slowly and clings to the rocky soil tenuously. So, access for off-roading a vehicle this high is extremely rare, for that reason. Coyote Flats is the only place I’m aware of in California where you can reach this height — 11,000 feet in some places — and probably the only place you can do it outside of Colorado. To put this elevation in perspective, the tallest mountain on the East Coast is North Carolina’s Mount Mitchell, which stands just 6,684 feet above sea level. What Is It. The 2015 Ford F-150 is an all-new truck and one that departs relatively hugely from the traditional full-size pickup format. The truck you see here is equipped with the Supercrew cab, which adds full-size rear doors and hugely spacious rear seats that fold up for a flat load floor. It also has the FX4 package, which is Detroit speak for “off-road. ” That brings Hill Descent Control, an electronically-locking rear diff, “off-road tuned” (read: stiffer) shocks, and skid plates for some additional protection. Bill would tell me stories about my dad that I would never have heard anywhere else. He told me how the two of them would make root-beer in the basement of my dad's house and how they would light spider webs in the basement with matches. One time we were having coffee, listening to some of the men talk about WWII and I asked Bill why my dad never talked about WWII. Bill told me that my dad never talked about the war because he didn't have a good war. What I will say is that Bill gave me a better understanding of my dad. When I came back to Bryan, Bill took me around town showing me houses. I remember that at the time Bill told me that a smart guy would never buy a house, but would just rent and put his money somewhere else. I didn't understand that at the time, but having lived in five houses in and around Bryan during the last 34 years I kinda do now. Betty and Bill have a farm in Michigan where they have planted walnut trees. Originally the farm was a partnership between Leonard and Dorothy Opdycke and Betty and Bill.
