It was the number-one-selling vehicle in the U. S. last year and had been in the top five for many years prior. Ford has lopped off two cylinders from the base engine, now a V6. For many so-called truck guys, this might seem like a dilution of what a truck should be — the more power, the better. The question then becomes, can a V6 take the place of a V8. After a week of driving around a 2011 Ford F-150 4X2 XLT SuperCab, we can answer that question with a conditional "Yes, for most people. Of course, simply offering a V6 in a full-size truck doesn't cut it. It needs to offer a compelling alternative to a V8. The Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have V6 engines, but only a bare-bones regular-cab work truck. The Dodge Ram and the Toyota Tacoma offer a V6 in more heavily optioned configurations, but these engines aren't really as powerful or as fuel-efficient as the F-150's. With the 2015 Ford F-150, the golden child of the F-Series brand, switching from steel to aluminum construction this year, we can't help but wonder -- is the 2015 F-150 still built Ford tough. To find out, we sourced ourselves what is perhaps the most interesting model in the new 2015 F-150 lineup, a 2015 F-150 Lariat SuperCab equipped with four-wheel drive and Ford's all-new 2. 7-liter twin-turbo V-6. The F-150 Lariat represents a step... That EcoBoost 2. 7-liter, twin-turbo V-6 isn't just tiny for a V-6, but it's also tiny for a pickup, making it the smallest displacement engine currently available in a half-ton pickup. it's made of a compacted graphite iron upper block (the same tough-but-light material used in Ford's Powerstroke 6. 7-liter turbodiesel V-8), and an aluminum lower block. And speaking of gamblers, how about the gamble being taken by the Ford Motor Company. For the past 37 years, the company has made the nation's best-selling pickup truck in the country — the F-Series. It's been the nation's top selling vehicle for the past 32 years. For 2015, Ford has completely redesigned the F-Series, and is now using aluminum instead of steel in the truck's body, for a weight savings of about 700 pounds. I drove a new 2015 Ford F-150 4X2 decked out in Lariat "supercab" trim. That meant a set of mini-doors behind the passenger and driver doors, and small amount of storage space/seating area behind the front seats in the cab. The test model was powered by a 2. 7-liter V6 "Ecoboost" engine that produces 325 horsepower. And my mileage was not as good as average for the vehicle, according to Ford, which rates the Ecoboost engine at 26 miles per gallon on the highway and 19 mpg in the city, or 22 mpg in combined driving for the two-wheel-drive model. One of the reasons that this engine gets such good mileage might be disconcerting to some people: At stop lights and stop signs, the engine turns itself off to save gas.
