Driving a Ford F-250, Timothy Michael Deacon, who had been drinking, barreled down the street, jumped the curb, and slammed into Wurr and Mastell. Mastell was thrown into the water and died instantly. "I took the lives of two innocent human beings that can never be replaced," Deacon said during his sentencing Friday. Deacon, 23, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation. He pleaded no contest in June to two counts of DUI manslaughter and one count of leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Mastell's and Wurr's friends and family read statements in court about their lives. Mastell grew up in Chicago and began travelling the world in her 20s. Through the years, she stayed in Japan, Brazil, and Indonesia, where she lived in a grass hut without power or water. "She was generous, kind-hearted, and respectful," read a statement by Frank Mastell, her brother. Wurr, from Germany, was a retired university professor who loved to talk about history. When Mastell's ex-husband, Marty Singer, met him, he knew she was meant to be with Wurr. Deacon's loved ones portrayed him as a young man who never got into trouble, but made one tragic mistake.
