The original Fiat 500 , often called the Cinquecento (500 in Italian) was a tiny car that was a large hit when introduced in 1957, so it remained on the market for close to 20 years. This resulted in the launch of a retro-look but all-new Fiat 500 in 2007, exactly 50 years after the original. The new Fiat 500 is often still called the Cinquecento despite it having a range of engine sizes, all of them well over 500cc. It's a couple of sizes up on the old 500, partly to provide crash protection in the way of crumple zones and... Australian imports of new Fiat 500 three-door hatchbacks began in February 2008, with a two-door cabriolet, a hatch with a huge fabric roof, joining the range two years later. Sales weren’t particularly good as the original importer charged top dollar for the baby Fiats. The pricing situation changed rapidly when Fiat’s head office took over Australian imports in May 2012. A series of price drops – which didn't exactly please existing owners – saw sales take off in a big way and the cute little Italian machines... For the past few months, chatter about a potential combination of the American auto-giant, General Motors (NYSE: GM ), and Fiat Chrysler (NYSE: FCAU ) had slammed to a halt. Since the beginning of the year, Sergio Marchionne, CEO of FCAU, had been entreating GM's management and major shareholders in an attempt to gain concession in a consolidation that he sees as not only positive, but inevitable. The following tables are to create a visual way of matching both entities side-by-side and keying in on company specific strengths and weaknesses. Looking at the leveraging of the two companies will illustrate the important borrowing hurdles and financial obligations the auto companies have, while at the same time providing a quantitative look at liabilities' relations to their respective... First off, and most importantly, both companies have sufficient assets to manage total and current liabilities. The companies both have higher debt than equity levels and have manageable debt as a percentage of total assets. While FCAU has adequate assets to cover liabilities, those assets are not mostly in cash and cash equivalent form. It also doesn't help that -- until June -- Fiat dealers could only offer three cars: The Fiat 500 minicar, the all-electric 500e and the quirky, polarizing 500L. What’s more, the 500 was designed in Italy for Europeans and was adapted for... The result: Fiat’s annual sales have plateaued at about 44,000 cars annually for the past three years and have dropped 13% during the first seven months of this year to 25,033. “The brand suffers from the same symptoms of all of the other brands... At a combined 30 miles per gallon, the Fiat 500 isn’t the most fuel efficient car its size, but Americans typically become more interested in small cars when gas prices are high and lose interest when gas prices are low. “Coming into the year, we didn’t expect gas prices to fall off the cliff, which shifted segments drastically, and unfortunately, drastically away from where we play,” said Jason Stoicevich, head of the Fiat brand in North America.
