Like just about all electric cars, Fiat's engineers won't let the driver dump full thrust out of the motor from a dead stop -- some safety-first nonsense about shearing axle shafts with all that instant 0-rpm torque. you can whip it around in an instant U-turn, drag-race all competitors to a rare open parking spot, and squeeze it into the space before your opponents finish the second part of their three-point turn. Sure, you'll be experiencing screaming tires and squirrely torque-steer during this process, and some drunk will back an Econoline loaded with four tons of waterlogged particle-board into your car after you walk away, but you'll get that spot. I didn't have an actual 24 Hours of LeMons race to organize on this trip, but there were important race-organization meetings to be had. Source: autoweek.com

2013-2015 Fiat 500E Recalled For Software Flaw - The Car Connection

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has issued a recall for 2013, 2014, and 2015 models of the fully electric Fiat 500e. According to a bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some of those vehicles may suffer from a software... The problem stems from two systems that control the electric car's battery pack -- namely, the Electric Vehicle Control Unit (EVCU) and the Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM). The trouble occurs when something goes wrong and the BPCM puts the 500e in "limp home" mode, which cuts output but allows the vehicle to keep moving long enough to reach a charging station or service area. Unfortunately, the software on the EVCU doesn't recognize the "limp home" command, which ultimately causes the 500e's high-voltage battery system to shut down. Thankfully, the 500e's safety, brake, and steering systems are managed by a completely different, 12-volt battery, which is unaffected by the software problem. (Though it's not clear whether that's enough to bring the 500e back to full power or just back to "limp home" status. Source: www.thecarconnection.com

And that’s a very good thing because the all-electric model of Fiat’s classic mini Cinquecento (the Italian word for 500 and its nickname since the 40s) Euro car is fast and gets an astonishing EPA-tested 87 miles on a full charge (or 108 MPGe). In fact, Fiat claims its 2015 500e has almost a 100-mile range in urban environment as the car’s regenerative braking system adds to its range capacity in stop-and-go traffic. Fiat claims some Californians could come away with a 2015 Fiat 500e “for as low as $20,600, after federal credits, state incentives and FIAT rebates. If you need to go on a long road trip, which extends way past your 500e’s driving range, it’s no problem as Fiat has a plan for that. It owns Enterprise Rent-A-Car and in addition, it has partnered with Alamo Rent A Car and National Car Rental to offer the Fiat 500e “pass program. ” Anyone who leases a 2015 Fiat 500e gets up to 12 days of “alternative transportation each year for the first three years after the date of purchase,” so says Fiat.
