Of the $105 million Chrysler agreed to pay, $70 million is a cash penalty. One of the most high profile of the recalls involved in Sunday's settlement included the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Liberty from model years 1993-2007. At issue were gas tanks that can leak after a severe rear impact. Now owners of 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees that are "prone to deadly fires" and have yet to be repaired will be able to trade in their SUV for $1,000 above market value or get a $100 gift card to have it fixed. Jeep owners driving a Liberty from model years 2002-2007 or a Grand Cherokee from 1999-2004 can also get a the $100 cash incentive for taking their SUVs in for repairs. In addition, owners of several models of Dodge and Ram trucks must be offered the option to sell their vehicle back to Fiat Chrysler if their vehicles were recalled for defective suspension parts and have not yet been repaired. Chrysler said in a statement that it accepts the "consequences with renewed resolve to improve our handling of recalls and re-establish the trust our customers place in us. ". “This is significantly different than just a normal recall”, said Peter Kitzmiller, president of the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association. As part of the agreement, FCA must buy the affected vehicles at a price that includes “a reasonable allowance for depreciation”, with a 10-percent bonus given to owners who have not gotten the recall repairs completed, The Detroit News reports. Fiat Chrysler will be paying $105 million, the largest recorded penalty to ever be imposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), for the company’s lax in security of millions of their vehicles. The two sides have been engaged in discussions since NHTSA held a July 2 public hearing on Fiat Chrysler’s recall performance. Scott Kunselman, the company’s head of vehicle safety , said it is changing the way it manages safety to follow the industry’s best practices. The NHTSA took a lot of heat last year for its failure to be more aggressive with GM early on. He said he doesn’t plan to get rid of the compact SUV. General Motors sues Hall Chevrolet in Chesapeake over sales of other brands - The Virginian-Pilot

General Motors has sued Hall Chevrolet, saying the dealer is violating an agreement to sell only Chevrolet vehicles at its lot in Chesapeake. In the suit, filed last week in U. S. District Court in Norfolk, the automaker said Hall is selling Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles at the location on 3412 Western Branch Blvd. At a meeting last month, according to the suit, representatives of Hall Chevrolet said selling other brands "would benefit its GM operations. " But GM said the other vehicles "compete directly with Chevrolet for the sale and service of passenger cars and light-duty trucks. "Despite GM's demand, Hall Chevrolet has refused to cease such activity," the suit said. GM said in the suit that it learned early this year that Hall had begun selling Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram vehicles at the lot "in violation of its specific contractual commitments. In 2006, the suit said, Hall Chevrolet first signed an agreement with GM promising "to conduct only Chevrolet dealership operations at the premises" and not to "make a change in the use of those premises without obtaining GM's prior written consent. Hall Chevrolet "is using a mobile trailer as a sales facility" for the four other brands "and began using the body shop for service operations," GM said in the suit. Source: hamptonroads.com
