Let’s make one thing perfectly clear: Although it starts life with the body of a production Dodge Challenger , the latest Mopar Dodge Challenger Drag Pak is not a street-legal vehicle. The 354 nomenclature tips its hat to the Gen 1 Hemi engines that tore it up back in the day with a similar 354-cubic-inch displacement, before the legendary 426 Hemi arrived on the scene and stole its thunder. ) Featuring a supercharger, cast-iron block, forged-steel crankshaft, Mopar-spec camshaft, and bespoke engine calibration, it packs a pedigree, but Mopar hasn’t yet revealed output figures. An aluminum block with pressed-in steel cylinder liners supports aluminum heads, and custom engine calibration ensures that the engine makes the most of its air and fuel mixture. Regardless of which engine you choose, a race-prepped automatic with three, count ’em, three forward ratios is the only way to funnel thrust to the ground. Hoosier drag radials measuring 28-by-4. 5 inches in the front and 30-by-9. 0 in the rear wrap a set of lightweight Mopar racing wheels. To help keep the skinny front tires pointed toward the finish line, the Drag Pak employs a lightweight tubular-steel front cradle, unique suspension geometry, and a Mopar K-member. Despite the fact that we’re now living in the Crossover Era – because no one calls them SUVs anymore – this also happens to be a fantastic time for fans of American cars that are high on style and big on horsepower. Don’t wax too nostalgic, because while the selection is smaller, today’s muscle car field is faster and, in pretty much every tangible way, infinitely better to drive than the 1960s originals – though we’d still take a Plymouth Superbird any day... The Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger haven’t been standing still, waiting for Chevy to get it together and streak past them with the latest Camaro. So before we can actually put these three head-to-head (-to-head) on a road or racetrack, we wanted to see how they stack up in terms of spec sheets, past driving experience, and the all important curb-side ‘wow factor. The R/T and the R/T Road and Track trims are favorites because they play the roles of both a family sedan and muscle car admirably. If you drive it gently, the Charger R/T will feel like a well-appointed sedan. Separating the R/T from the SE and SXT trims are 20-inch satin carbon aluminum wheels, Alcantara suede and leather covered performance seats, driver’s seat memory, performance engine and transmission calibration. The 2015 Dodge Charger R/T Road & Track trim emphasizes a little more on performance and comes standard with a unique 3. 07 rear axle ratio (versus the standard 2. 62 rear axle ratio), a sport-tuned Super Track Pak suspension, a high-speed engine... Additional cost for the R/T Road and Track trim is a mere $3,000 for better handling and higher performance capabilities. With 395 lb-ft of torque, the Charger R/T is brutal and has enough torque to chirp the tires all the way up to highway speeds. When deep into the throttle, the muscular sedan roars like a big cat on a charge. Even though the HEMI has four-cylinder mode fuel saver technology, the hefty V8, paired with an eight-speed Torqueflite transmission, is rated at 16 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
