The 2012 GMC Sierra 1500 has been on the market since summer 2006, when it debuted as a 2007 model. Like its Silverado platform-mate, the Sierra was near the top of its class when it debuted. The full-size truck currently faces stiffer competition from Ford and Ram, as well as from Toyota and Nissan, but GMC has kept it updated with the latest technology and safety equipment including navigation, backup camera, and dealer-installed WiFi hotspot. A new Sierra 1500 is expected for the 2014 model year. The Sierra HD was all-new in 2011; its Silverado platform mate won Motor Trend's Truck of the Year award.

The 2012 Sierra 1500 is available in three cab sizes, three bed lengths, two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, or all-wheel drive and with a base V-6 or five optional V-8 engines, and two transmissions. Several suspension choices can be specified. Denali versions offer luxury car-like appointments. HD models come with a base 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 with six-speed Hydramatic automatic transmission or optional Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel V-8 mated to a six-speed Allison automatic transmission.

The Sierra 1500 can carry a payload of between 1512-1980 pounds - that's three-quarter-ton to almost a full ton capacity - and when properly equipped, the 1500 can tow as much as 10,700 pounds. The Hybrid is still capable of towing 6200 pounds. The Sierra HD is a serious workhorse: it can tow up to 18,000 with a conventional hitch or an astonishing 23,000 pounds with a bed-mounted fifth-wheel hitch. The Heavy Duty version also has a max payload of 7215 pounds.

The Sierra 1500 enters its sixth model year with some revisions. SLE and SLT models gain a new chrome three-bar grille design. Heated and cooled seats are available on SLT trim. Heated and cooled front seats, leather-wrapped heated steering wheel and rearview camera system are now standard on Sierra Denali. Quicksilver Metallic is a new exterior color. The half-ton also features OnStar, SiriusXM, and connectivity through Bluetooth, USB, and dealer-installed WiFi. SLT and Denali models gain optional hard-drive navigation radio with AM/FM/XM stereo with CD/DVD player, MP3 compatibility and USB port. 20-inch chrome alloy wheels are available. Work Truck models (with trailering package get the Z85 handling/trailering suspension. SL Crew Cab models get the Z85 suspension package standard. Trailer Sway Control and Hill Start Assist work with StabiliTrak electronic stability control for additional control during towing. The six-speed automatic transmission automatically downshifts during deceleration for engine compression braking to reduce brake pad wear. The Cruise Grade Braking feature works during towing and normal driving. Sierra 3500HD LTZ models with dual rear wheels get a new 17-inch forged polished aluminum wheel standard.

The Sierra can be ordered in three cab styles and three cargo box lengths from 5 ft, 8 in. to 8 ft. 1500 SLE and SLT models gain a new chrome three-bar grille design. Sierra Denali gets body-colored bumpers; other models get chrome. A chrome essential package is available on SLE and SLT models and includes chrome tube steps, recovery hooks, door handles, mirror caps, alloy wheels, and a polished exhaust tip. Fog lamps, heated, power mirrors, EZ-Lift tailgate, and locking tailgate are available on select trim levels. Wheel choices range from 17- to 20-inches. A Power Tech Package is available on SLE models. SLE and SLT trims can be ordered with an All Terrain Package which includes the Z71 off-road suspension. The Sierra adds Quicksilver Metallic to its list of exterior colors.

The GMC Sierra has "professional grade" interior touches such as larger controls and handles designed to use while wearing gloves. Work Truck models are spartan, but each step-up among the trim levels increases the amount of amenities standard and available. Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard on Denali and SLT and optional on SLE and XFE. SiriusXM with NavTraffic, Bluetooth, Bose audio system and rear-seat entertainment system are available. An updated navigation radio features an internal hard drive for maps. OnStar, SiriusXM, and connectivity through Bluetooth, USB, and dealer-installed WiFi are among options. Cloth seats are standard; leather is available with or without heating and cooling functions.

HD models are powered by two powerful engines. The base engine is a 6.0-liter gasoline V-8 with 322-360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. An optional Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel V-8 makes 397 horsepower and churns out a whopping 765 lb-ft of torque. The Duramax-powered truck can tow up to 18,000 with a conventional hitch or an astonishing 23,000 pounds with a bed-mounted fifth-wheel hitch. The Heavy Duty version also has a max payload of 7215 pounds.

StabiliTrak electronic traction control with rollover mitigation works with roof-mounted rollover-capable head curtain airbags and safety belt pretensioners to prevent and protect in case of a rollover accident. Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist with rearview camera assists when backing up the large truck. A tire pressure monitoring system is standard fare.
