The Toyota Texas Bass Classic (TTBC) was a muddy mess for fishing fans who planned to attend the festivities. Ehrler won’t soon forget Memorial Day, 2015. The California angler won the $150,000 TTBC prize package capped off late in the day with a 10 pounds, 11 ounce bass that not only gave him the victory, it was also the tournament’s biggest bass. Thus Ehrler added a Toyota Tundra pickup truck valued at about $50,000 to his prize package. It was his biggest payday since he won $500,000 in the FLW Forrest Wood Cup Championship tournament in 2006. His biggest 15 fish over three days weighed 89 pounds, 12 ounces, just shy of a six pound average. “I had just said to my marshal that it only takes one cast to win a new truck,” said Ehrler. During TTBC, a marshal assigned to each of the 35 competition boats weighs and releases fish as soon as they are caught, phoning in the weight to the tournament headquarters. On day one, Christie caught three fish bigger than 24 inches. His top five weighed 37 pounds four ounces, more than a seven-pound average. Ehrler finished the second day in fifth place, six pounds behind Christie. Ehrler said he had his spot all to himself except that Kevin VanDam, the world’s best-known bass angler, came in on Saturday, fished for a few minutes, didn’t get a bite and left. Juan Pablo Montoya, 39, holds a 21-point lead in the IndyCar standings. “Look at me and Helio [Castroneves] and Montoya,” said Tony Kanaan, at age 40 the oldest full-time IndyCar racer, in a telephone conversation Monday. Montoya never expected to be racing at this advanced age. He anticipated retiring at about age 35, after a successful run in Formula One racing. Montoya won seven Formula One events in 94 races but did not stop there. He jumped to a full-time ride in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2007 and struggled for seven seasons. Montoya had two wins in 252 Cup starts with Ganassi.
