The letter writer references a PO box that is my campaign’s address, but is unaware of the fact that I am a resident of Ironton – a fact listed on my campaign paperwork with the Secretary of State’s office. In the area I live, we all have PO boxes because we don’t get home delivery – and my PO box is different from the campaign PO box. The other point the letter writer may not have realized is that I sold my house in January because I make less than half the salary that I did before becoming a legislator. My old job – working with federal civilian employees at Air Force bases, Social Security offices and other federal installations – required me to travel nationally at least two weeks a month. I couldn’t perform both my job duties and the duties of your legislator being gone that much. I get my coffee every morning at a local coffee shop. When I do leave town, it’s to fight for things like reducing the funding gap between the richest and poorest schools, boosting the wages of the home care and nursing home workers taking care of our seniors and bringing back our tax dollars to fund... Letter was not accurate. It’s probably impossible to edit letters to the editor for accuracy, especially during the busy campaign season. Source: www.messagemedia.co

Enrollment up at Rippleside Elementary - Aitkin Independent Age

These are the figures administrators use to plan for the next school year, Superintendent Bernie Novak informed board members at their first meeting of 2014. Given the influx and predictions for next year, Rippleside Principal Jesse Peterson... If the enrollment trend continues, he added, space could be an issue at Rippleside next year but he and Peterson expected class sizes to remain at 23-24 students per class. Currently, 11 students are attending Central Lakes College through the Post Secondary Options program and there are 13 students attending the Aitkin Alternative School, full-time – one junior and 12 seniors. Novak estimated that 27 students in grades one through 10 are being homeschooled, a loss of about $135,000 for the district. Officers for 2014. The first meeting of the year is an organizational meeting where officers are appointed and board members are assigned to serve on committees for the rest of the year. Salaries were set at the same level as last year – $245 per month for the chair. $235 per month, treasurer and $220 per month for vice chair, clerk and the remaining three board members. Dates for regular meetings remain the third Monday of the month, except in January and February when meetings are held the second Monday of the month to prevent conflicts with federal holidays.
