Woman killed in Route 18 crash - Chronicle-Telegram

— A 75-year-old Wellington woman died in a head-on crash on state Route 18 between Pitts and Quarry roads about 3:30 p. m. Tuesday. Renate Thomas was westbound in a 2003 Ford Explorer when she drove left of center and struck an eastbound 1997 Ford F350 pickup driven by Kenneth Willbond, said Sgt. Thomas, of 52327 state Route 18, had an oxygen tank in the Explorer, but Hoffman said it was too soon to determine if a medical condition caused the crash, which remains under investigation. , the crushed pickup lay on its passenger side by the eastbound guardrail. About 30 yards away, the Explorer, which sustained heavy front-end, driver’s side damage, lay against the westbound guardrail. , 47599 State Route 18. Doug Linden, a Denes worker, said he ran to the pickup and recognized Willbond. Linden said Willbond was conscious but said he was unsure of how the crash occurred. Fire and police reports were unavailable Tuesday night, but Fire Chief Mike Wetherbee said Willbond appeared to have a broken leg and had facial injuries. He said they were using crowbars to try to extricate Willbond when firefighters arrived and took over. Wetherbee said Willbond was extricated in about 20 minutes. The pickup was leaking a heavy amount of gas and Wetherbee said Denes employees did a good job of using a cat litter-type substance to soak it up. “I can’t say enough about the employees,” Wetherbee said.
