Real vs. Reel: How much is fiction in tornado films 'Into the Storm,' 'Twister?' - AL.com

When the film "Twister" debuted in 1996, some people questioned its premise of multiple strong tornadoes striking in the same vicinity in a short period of time. Anyone who recalled the April 3, 1974, Super Tornado Outbreak that struck Alabama knew otherwise. Not only was Alabama hit that day by a record three F5 tornadoes, the strongest in intensity, Limestone County was hit twice within an hour by tornadoes moving on the same path. After April 27, 2011, few people doubted events like those depicted in "Twister" happened "in real life. " More than 300 tornadoes struck numerous states over April 27 and 28, including 62 in Alabama. In 2014, a film called "Into the Storm" premiered, showing a similar premise to "Twister," a group of storm chasers dealing with multiple deadly tornadoes striking the same area in a single day. At one point in the film, the meteorologist for the group calls the multiple storms on the same path a "freak occurrence. , said super outbreaks occur every 40 or so years, as evidenced by those that struck Alabama in 1932, 1974 and 2011. "It will take maybe once every 35 years or once every 50 years for the atmosphere to put together the ingredients necessary for an... Both of these things can and do happen in tornadoes, Carbin said. Nor is radical Islam the only threat to years of work and billions in investment in the region by Washington and its European partners.
