Jeep Offers JK-8 Pickup Truck Conversion for Wrangler Priced at $5499 - Automobile Magazine

Jeep Wrangler owners are particular people: they purchase Wranglers by the thousands because they want to take friends and supplies and combine them in a car that can climb a small mountain. But for people who want a couple fewer friends and a bit more supplies, Jeep has introduced the JK-8 conversion package that can transform the Wrangler Unlimited into a pickup truck. We’ve previously reported on the kit, but it now has a price tag: $5499. The JK-8 kit is available for purchase at any Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram dealership, where it can also be installed. The kit was announced and demonstrated at this year’s Jeep Moab Safari , where engineers managed to convert a Wrangler Unlimited to a Wrangler Unlimited JK-8 pickup in about an hour in front of a small crowd. The look, Jeep says, is inspired by the 1981 CJ-8 Scrambler, which was popular until it was replaced in 1986 by the Comanche pickup. Jeep might be on its way to producing a new pickup truck (finally), but for the time being this is this closest you’ll get. Source: www.automobilemag.com
  • Jeep Comanche pickup trucks, 1986-1992 - Allpar, LLC

1989 jeep comancheThe Jeep Comanche (MJ) was an innovative compact pickup with strong engines, high capacities, and optional four wheel drive — using a unibody structure (albeit with a “uniframe,” pictured below). The Comanche was based on the unibody Cherokee/Wagoneer (XJ), using their optional Command-Trac four wheel drive system (base configurations were rear drive). It could shift on the fly from two to four wheel drive, at any speed. The Comanche had a standard six foot bed, with a seven foot long bed optional.

The new Cherokee/Wagoneer had been introduced in 1984, and was far ahead of its (few) body-on-frame competitors. It was shorter in length than the first-generation Cherokee, and was over a thousand pounds lighter, checking in at a svelte 3,100 pounds. From this remarkable vehicle, well ahead of its time and its competitors, came the Jeep Comanche pickup. It had a lower overall height and bed height than Chevy or Ford pickups — yet, it had more ground clearance.

    uniframe

The Comanche shared its assembly line, so building more Comanches meant sacrificing production of the highly-profitable Cherokee and Wagoneer. That, and competition with the Dodge Dakota — after Chrysler acquired AMC — are probably the main reasons why the Comanche was eventually dropped.

    Land speed record and racing

1986 Jeep Comanche Land Speed Record

In 1986, its second year on the market, a 1987 Jeep Comanche set a speed record at Bonneville of just over 144 mph. A special prepared, two wheel drive Comanche, powered by a modified 4-liter fuel-injected straight-six, set nine United States and four international records in Bonneville time trials. The highlight was its record average speed of 141.381 miles per hour, in a two-way dash over a one-mile measured course; its peak speed was 144.028 mph. (Thanks, Peter Lechtanski, for this section.) See the Land Speed Record Jeep Comanche page.

Jeep Motorsports also campaigned Jeep Comanches in both offroad (SCORE) and paved road (SCCA) competition. Mike Leslie, Larry Maddox, Curt LeDuc and others campaigned the SCORE teams, and the Archer Brothers (Tommy and Bobby) campaigned the SCCA mini truck cars. Lee Hurley built all the engines for the factory Jeep teams, both the 4 cylinder and inline 6. Bob Salemi set an IHRA record with a 4-liter Comanche in September 2009, in HT/SA, with a 12.95 quarter mile at 100 mph (New England Dragway - thanks, Bob Sheaves).

Bob Sheaves also wrote: “In 1992, the Dodge Dakota trucks campaigned in the Mickey Thompson Stadium Truck series won the championship from Toyota by a wide margin. In reality, these two trucks were the previous year's Comanches with the Dakota sheet metal. The trusty race modified 4.0 Jeep engines were even used instead of the Chrysler 3.9 V6s!”

    Powertrains

At its launch in 1986, buyers could choose between three engines: a diesel, the most powerful four-cylinder engine of any compact pickup, and a troublesome GM V6. Starting in 1987 the new four-liter six cylinder (standard on Eliminator models) replaced the GM V6, making the Comanche quick indeed. The 2.5 liter four cylinder came with standard fuel injection, unusual in domestic vehicles at the time (though soon to be common). The Peugeot diesel advertised at launch was quickly followed by a 2.1 liter Renault diesel (based on the 2.0 liter Douvrin), which was dropped midyear.

The 4.0 liter I6 was rated at 173 hp when it arrived in 1987; by 1990, it had 177 hp. At that time, the bigger GM 4.3 liter V6 only made 160 hp, the Ford 4.9L I6 (used in the F150 and Econoline) only made 145HP, the Ford 4.0 V6 made 155HP, the Chrysler 5.2L made 170HP, Jeep’s own AMC-era 360 V8 (with two-barrel carb) made 144HP, and the Nissan 3.0 V6 (used in the Pathfinder) made 153HP.

Evan Boberg, an AMC engineer, wrote in his book, Common Sense Not Required, that the Comanche earned a lower profit than the Cherokee and Wagoneer, so that in effect the company lost money when making Comanches, leading to its being dropped (along with its competing with the Dodge pickups). He also wrote, “The story I was told was [that] the executive in charge of the design of the Cherokee hated the AMC inline 6 cylinder engine (the 4.2 liter) and specifically designed the Cherokee so it would not fit. The Nash 2.5 liter engine was fitted with fuel injection and the General Motors 2.8 liter V6 with oil leaks were the original engine options.” The four liter engine had long been under construction at AMC, and was based closely on the successful 2.5 liter four-cylinder. Its horsepower made acceleration faster than most cars, and its torque allowed 5,000 pounds to be towed. Not for nothing was the Cherokee popular, for an SUV of that era, among the police.

Aisin-Warner, a joint venture between Aisin Seiki and Borg Warner in Japan, provided manual transmissions, including the AX-4 (four-speed), AX-5 (five-speed), and AX-15 (five-speed). A Peugeot BA-10/5 five-speed was used from 1987 until mid-1989 with the I-6. The Chrysler Torqueflite automatic was used in 1986 only, followed by the AW-4 four-speed automatic.

The Comanche used unit-body construction, unusual among pickups; it was the first production pickup with unibody and a removable bed. The Jeep pickup truck was created by connecting a subframe to the standard Cherokee chassis for the cargo box; a different subframe was designed for the 1987 short-bed version. The front suspension used coil springs and both upper and lower control arms, the Jeep Link/Coil suspension (later called Quadra-Link), which provided for greater wheel travel when off-road without giving up on-road ride or cornering. A trackbar kept the axle centered. The Quadra-Link suspension would later be used on the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler. A major advantage of this suspension was its very light weight.

    quadra-link

In back, traditional leaf springs were used to increase cargo capacity, with a maximum metric ton long-bed version through 1990. The 2,205-pound or 2,240-pound (depending on sources) payload capacity was comparable to some full-sized pickups; to get there, Jeep added heavy-duty U-joints and propshaft, Dana 44 rear axle, and heavy duty brakes, among other items.

According to Bob Sheaves, Dana 44 axles used in the metric ton package were actually a hybrid axle-a semi floating design, they used a D44 ring, pinion, and differential case with smaller wheel bearings and D35C design wheel ends on the axle shafts, when compared to the earlier D44 used in the CJ. He noted that the Class 7 racing cars started out as metric-ton MJs.

Standard towing capacity was 1,400 pounds (1,475 pounds starting in 1987), using a Dana 35 or Chrysler axle.

    selec-trak Jeep 4 liter engine

Starting in 1991, the Comanche's engines used Chrysler engine computers, allowing for easier diagnostics; before that, Chrysler had to honor contracts with AMC's ignition system vendor, Renix. There are two yellow rubber covers on the right side of the engine compartment; dealers can use the DRBII and the Jeep adapter to get codes and do certain tests. (Codes might not be stored in the Renix system and would have to be regenerated while the adapter was connected, according to Rob Mayercik.) Both engines jumped up in power, the 2.5 liter going up 13 hp to 130 hp — which was 30 hp more than Chrysler's own 100-hp 2.5 liter four — and the 4.0 going up 13 hp to 190 hp, well above the Chrysler 3.8 liter V6, which until 1993 only produced 150 hp and 213 lb-ft of torque).

During the mid-1980s, according to AMC chairman W. Paul Tippett Jr.: "People are finding trucks a reasonable and sophisticated alternative to cars."[4] To satisfy the demand and to compete with Japanese competitors, both AMC and Chrysler were preparing pickups for the 1986 and 1987 model years (respectively).[4] Also at this time the financial health of AMC was poor and the automaker was in need of cash as it was preparing a new line of midsize vehicles (the Eagle Premier) scheduled to be produced at a factory being built in Canada (Brampton Assembly), but the best thing the company had going for it was its popular line of Jeeps and introducing a compact Jeep pickup truck in the fall of 1985 was expected to help.[5]

The Jeep Comanche was introduced in mid-August 1985, at a lavish event staged at the ballroom of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino (currently Bally's Las Vegas) for AMC's over 1,500 North American dealers.[6] American Motors included Chinese officials as part of the negotiations establishing Beijing Jeep (now Beijing Benz). The goal was to produce and sell Comanches in China through this joint venture.[6]

The new trucks were unveiled by Jose Dedeurwaerder, an engineer and international business executive with 23 years of experience with Renault, and now appointed as AMC's new president. The base price of the two-wheel drive model was $7,049 (adjusted only for inflation equal to US$15,457 in 2015 dollars[7]), making it the lowest priced Jeep model for the 1986 model year.[8]

American Motors' Jeep designers based the Comanche MJ body, styling, engineering, and drivetrain on the Cherokee XJ, which had been introduced for the 1984 model year.[3] The Comanche had a more conventional removable cargo box and conventional body-frame design. The Rabbit Pickup (Caddy) and Dodge Rampage are technically coupe utilities, not trucks, since the cargo bed is an integral part of the body structure and not removable.[citation needed]

AMC's Jeep engineering staff designed a rail "frame" structure to support the cargo box that was unitized with the front passenger section of a four-door XJ Cherokee. Two cargo bed lengths were used; one for the seven-foot long-bed model, which appeared first in 1985, and a second, shorter version for the six-foot cargo bed, which debuted for the 1987 model year. The "frame" structure (called a "Uniframe" by Jeep) was made up like unitized car body main supports - from stamped sheet metal components spot welded together. For strength, the rails were over eight inches deep (top to bottom), much deeper than conventional midsize truck frames (1983 Jeep J-10 fulls size truck frame is 6.75 inches at the deepest point). This structure was pioneered by AMC for the 1971 "Cowboy" compact pickup prototype.

From 1985 to 1987, the Jeep Comanche grille had ten slots in a similar configuration to the 1984-1987 Cherokee XJ, while from 1988 to 1992, this configuration changed to eight slots to match with the SUV.[9] A new "4x4" badge, similar to those found on the Cherokee and Wagoneer models, was affixed to the upper rear of the cargo box on all the four-wheel drive models.[1]

After the Chrysler buyout of American Motors for $1.5 billion on March 9, 1987, designed to capture "the highly profitable Jeep vehicles ... and 1,400 additional dealers"[10] the Jeep Comanche, like the similar Cherokee, received only minor changes. These were primarily to improve reliability and parts interchangeability with other Chrysler-built vehicles.

Suspension[edit] Jeep Comanche Chief with aftermarket modifications

The Comanche uses the compact XJ Cherokee's front suspension, with coil springs and upper and lower control arms. The Cherokee and Comanche were the first Jeeps to use this new "Quadra-Link" suspension. It was argued that the coil springs allowed for greater ride comfort and axle articulation during off-road excursions. A track bar (Panhard rod) is used to keep the axle centered under the truck. Modified versions of this same basic suspension system were later used on the 1993-2004 Grand Cherokee, 1997 and newer TJ Wranglers and 1994 and newer Dodge Rams.

For the rear suspension, the truck uses leaf springs that are considerably longer than the Cherokee's, which give Comanches good load-carrying capacity without creating a hard ride. The standard rear axle is the same Dana 35 used in the Cherokee, except that the Comanche mounts the leaf springs underneath the axle, as do most other trucks, and the Cherokee mounts them on top of the axle. There was also a heavy duty "Big Ton" package (known as the "Metric Ton" package outside the U.S.) for the long-bed models. The package included heavier-duty leaf springs and wheels, larger tires and upgraded the rear axle to a Dana 44, which increased the stock payload (cargo) capacity from 1,400 to 2,205 pounds (635 to 1,000 kg), well above that of any other mid-size truck. The Big or Metric Ton Comanche's payload rating was higher than that of many full-size pickups.

    Drivetrain[edit]

The inaugural 1986 model year Comanches could be equipped with one of three engines. The AMC 150 2.5 L, 150 CID I4, The General Motors LR2 2.8 L V6, or the Renault 2.1 L I4 turbo diesel were all offered from the start.[3]

The V6 engine, which was the same basic unit used in the first generation Chevrolet S-10, had 7 hp (5 kW; 7 PS) less than the base four-cylinder, only slightly more torque, and was equipped with a two-barrel carburetor instead of the four-cylinder's electronic TBI fuel injection.

Changes to the engine lineup happened in the truck's second year on the market. For 1987, the 2.8 L V6 was replaced by the new fuel-injected 4.0 L, 242 CID AMC 242 inline-six that delivered 173 hp (129 kW; 175 PS), or 63 more hp than the previously outsourced V6.[11] The new six-cylinder was also more fuel-efficient. The slow-selling turbodiesel was dropped during the model year.

Other changes under the hood occurred in 1991, when Chrysler adopted their own engine control electronics to replace the original Renix systems. One effect of this change was that the 4.0 L, 242 CID, I-6 engine gained 17 hp (to 190 hp (142 kW; 193 PS), having already gained 4 hp (3 kW; 4 PS) in 1988), while the 2.5 L, 150 CID, I4 engine jumped from 117 hp (87 kW; 119 PS) to 130 hp (97 kW; 132 PS).

During the production life of the Comanche, six different transmissions were offered, manufactured by Aisin, Chrysler, and Peugeot. Aisin provided the AX-4 (four-speed), AX-5 and AX-15 (five-speed overdrive) manual transmissions, along with the AW-4 four-speed automatic that was used beginning in 1987. This is the same Warner transmission used in early- to mid-1990s Toyota 4Runners with the 3.0 and some 22re 4wd. The AX-15 was phased in to replace the Peugeot BA-10 five-speed that had been used from 1987 until mid-1988 behind the 4.0 L I6 engine. The Comanche came equipped with a weight sensing rear brake proportioning valve.

Although Chrysler purchased AMC in 1987, only one Chrysler transmission was ever used in the Comanche, and that was prior to the takeover. 1986 models equipped with the 2.5 L I4 or 2.8 L V6 were offered with Chrysler's three-speed TorqueFlite A904 automatic.[3] Throughout the Comanche's production run, Chrysler would continue AMC's practice of purchasing Aisin automatic transmissions.

The decision to phase out the Jeep Comanche "came from a combination of two factors— low sales and Chrysler's attempts to make the Jeep brand fit into the Chrysler hierarchy of Plymouth, Dodge, and Chrysler models" with Jeep housing SUVs and Dodge making trucks.[12]

As sales dropped, the Comanche was planned for discontinuation. In 1990, the National Council of Jeep-Eagle dealers asked Chrysler to discontinue the Comanche, and allow them to sell a version of the Dodge Dakota pickup.[13]

The company decided to cease production of the Comanche on June 12, 1992, after only a few thousand more trucks rolled off the Toledo, Ohio assembly line.[14] A total of 190,446 Comanches were made during its production run.[15]

  • The 1986 Jeep Comanche - The Last Jeep Pick-Up ...

    Poster of 1985 Jeep Comanche

    Imaging by OldCarBrochures.com

Rumors are circulating that Jeep is considering introducing a new pick-up to be sold alongside current Jeep Wranglers, Jeep Cherokees, and Jeep Liberties. With new Jeep offerings in other markets such as China in high demand, now might be the right time for Jeep to try something new in the states as well. While hoping for a new addition to the Jeep lineup, we thought it would be fun to take a look back at the last Jeep pick-up to grace the streets – the Jeep Comanche.

The Jeep Comanche – A Look Back

The Jeep Comanche was introduced in 1985 as a 1986 model year and was produced by Jeep until 1992. Jeep put the Comanche into the market because it was a time in America when many people realized that pick-up trucks could be utilized as an everyday vehicle, not just something to haul loads of stuff from one place to another.Wheeling Jeep Comanche

Jeep introduced the Comanche in the middle of August 1985 at a lavish gala in the ballroom of the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas strip. The event was attended by over 1,500 of AMC’s North American dealerships. This new Jeep pick-up truck was introduced by AMC’s at-the-time new President Jose Dedeurwaerder.

The engineers at American Motor Cars based the Comanche MJ on the Cherokee XJ which had been introduced a year earlier. The styling, the engineering and even the drivetrain were all based on the Cherokee XJ. One of the most unique features of the Comanche was the unibody construction of the Jeep pick-up truck. The Comanche also had what is known as a removable cargo box like most traditional pick-up trucks will carry.

Under the hood of the original 1986 model came a choice of three different engines: the AMC 150 2.5-liter 150 CID I4, the General Motors LR2 2.8-liter V6, or the Renault 2.1-liter I4 turbo diesel. The 1987 model saw the first fuel injected 4.0-liter 242 CID AMC inline-six replace the 2.8-liter V6 in the Comanche lineup.

Over the years of production, the Jeep Comanche was offered with six different transmissions which were manufactured by Chrysler, Peugeot, and Aisin. Aisin made the AX-4 which was a four speed, the AX-5 and AX-15 which were both five-speeds with overdrive and each was only offered with a manual transmission. Aisin also provided the AW-4 four-speed automatic transmission that began with the 1987 model.

Jeep Comanche The truck was phased out of production for a wide range of factors, but the most compelling reason to stop production as the fact that it didn’t sell very well. In fact, the National Council on Jeep/Eagle dealers went to Chrysler and asked them to stop producing the Jeep Comanche because it wasn’t selling. They then requested that they sell a version of the Dodge Dakota pick-up instead.

While the current Jeep CEO hints at the possibility of a new generation of Jeep pick-up trucks we can all bask in the history of the Jeep Comanche. While it may not be a Jeep Wrangler we can all appreciate, it has a place in the annuls of Jeep lore.
