Woman suspected in fake cash scam - Pueblo Chieftain

Fernandez, 36, is facing several charges including forgery (possession), two additional counts of forgery (use), criminal possession of an unidentified document, criminal possession of a financial device and possession of a Schedule II substance... Police said Monday that Fernandez was found to be in possession of $500 in counterfeit bills. Officers were sent to the 1600 block of Comanche on Sunday. As they arrived, they made contact with victims who stated they received counterfeit money at a yard sale. They told police the woman drove off in a green Jeep. Police said Fernandez would select items at local yard sales and ask unsuspecting sellers to break larger bills. “Individuals holding yard sales are advised to use a counterfeit money detector pen to avoid becoming a victim,” Gonzales said. Police responded to two shots fired calls Monday night at different times in two separate locations. Police were dispatched to a call of shots fired on the 1300 block of Anita Street around 11:45 p. m. where a man reported to officers he heard four or five gunshots in the area. RACIAL DISPUTE: UCR professor not Cherokee, Indians say - Press-Enterprise

Patti Jo King, a Cherokee and former Riverside resident, is a professor of American Indian Studies at Bacone College, a historically American Indian school in Muskogee, Okla. She said she confronted Smith about her claim of Cherokee heritage at a Native American and Indigenous Studies Association conference in 2007. King said she and Smith had a cordial conversation at a coffee shop. King said she recognizes that some people with American Indian heritage may not be able to prove it, either because of missing records or families that were split up as tribes were moved and dispersed. But the Cherokee Nation relies on the Dawes Final Rolls, a census of the tribe taken between 1899 and 1906. To be recognized as a member of the Cherokee Nation, a person must have an ancestor listed on the rolls. Deadly shooting in Pike National Forest creates gun debate - Colorado Springs Gazette

The fatal shooting of a 60-year-old camper in Pike National Forest last week has prompted new scrutiny of lax enforcement on public lands. Only two law enforcement officers patrol the 1. 1 million-acre Pike National Forest, where Glenn Martin was shot at a campsite north of Woodland Park despite a target shooting ban there. One officer is in charge of the equally huge San Isabel National Forest. Martin's daughter Carlie said the family had heard gunshots while camping near Rainbow Falls and told a ranger, who said he'd check it out. With two officers in the forest, odds are long that one will show up in time. "It's a matter of whether we've got people in the area at the right time at the right place," said Tom Healy, a Forest Service law enforcement officer. Still, the number of warnings issued to shooters has risen dramatically in the past year - from 33 in 2013-14 to 450 in 2014-15, according to Forest Service statistics. Enforcement on public lands is a shared responsibility of Forest Service, state and regional law enforcement, said Erin Connelly, who oversees the Pike and San Isabel national forests and Comanche National Grassland. The Forest Service also works to educate shooters about local policies and to find places where earthen backstops can reduce gunfire risks. Source: gazette.com
