Competing in car shows isn’t why Horacio Valdez restores old cars, but a mistake led to him winning the Best of Show trophy, the top award, at the 23rd annual Dinuba Car Show on Saturday at Rose Ann Vuich Park. When Valdez heard this year’s car show was going to be at Rose Ann Vuich Park he decided to take his family. Another son, Horacio Jr. , had restored a 1969 Chevy Camaro. “During my sons’ senior years I work with them on restoring a car for them,” Horacio said. “Restoring cars has always been a hobby of mine,” Horacio said. Horacio and his two sons decided to take all three cars to the car show. At the event Horacio’s car was going to be placed in a different section of the park than his sons’ cars, so Horacio told the judges not to worry about having his car entered in the show. “What I enjoyed even more than winning the car show was seeing my sons win trophies. As it turned out, Fabian placed first in the Mopar Muscle Cars category and Horacio Jr. placed second in the Camaros and Firebirds category. Horacio said he later found out that the judges were deciding on Fabian’s car and his for Best of Show. Horacio said that the best part about Saturday at the park was spending time with his family,. Bill Orr got involved with this hobby like many others, as a high school kid. While a lot of young hot rodders in the early '70s were drawn to Camaros, Chevelles, Mustangs, and Mopars, Bill's first ride was a 1957 Chevy. Like many young hot rodders, Bill didn't have a lot of money or time to sink into his car. Forty years later, he used that same successful technique to build his 1953 Ford F-100. When he bought the truck five years ago, it was still running the factory powertrain: flathead engine, three-speed overdrive transmission, and Dana 44 rear,... "One day I pulled the truck out of the garage and realized I didn't want to drive it that way. The old-fashioned tradition of friends swapping parts and services was put to good use in the building of the F-100. Bill is the owner of Orr's Heating & Air Conditioning. His friend Ken Guge is the owner of Ken's Collision Center. Ken has a new furnace and air conditioner in his house and Bill has some expertly done sheetmetal work and a great paintjob on his truck. The cab was in fairly good condition to start with — what Bill calls the regular "wear and tear and bumps. The office has been tasked with disposing of an estate of a Buena Park plumber who died last summer without an original will or any legally recognized next of kin – an estate that included 69 cars. In November, Deputy Public Administrator Investigator Brett Williams found 69 vehicles parked in the front, side and backyards of the plumber’s half-acre Buena Park property.
