The Florida Gators recovered slightly last year and returned to the postseason — albeit with a barely memorable victory over East Carolina in something called the Birmingham Bowl. But systemic problems within one of the nation’s typically elite programs cost coach Will Muschamp his job late in his fourth season. McElwain’s only head-coaching experience came in three seasons at Colorado State, but he knows the SEC too well to expect the Gators to turn the clock back to 2008 — when Urban Meyer won his second national championship in three seasons at Florida. McElwain was Alabama’s offensive coordinator at the time and went on to win a pair of national titles with the Crimson Tide (in 2009 and 2011). “I think part of the experience of being in this conference is realizing it doesn’t happen just... And yet every time we go to work every day, every time we wake up, our responsibility is to try to go out there and win. Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko will miss some time with a lower-body injury, but the club says he will be ready to return for the playoffs. "Lower-body, day to day, that's what you're going to get for the next four months — get used to it," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. Hitchcock did acknowledge that Tarasenko would not play in Thursday's game against Calgary at Scottrade Center. His reference "that's what you're going to get for the next four months" was a reminder that regardless of the extent of a player's injury from here on out, they will be deemed simply "day to day. "So everybody is day to day, and certainly everybody is going to be ready for Game 1 of the playoffs. That would include Alexander Steen , who has missed one game with an lower-body injury. "Everybody is day to day, everybody will be ready for the playoffs," Hitchcock said. The Blues are now without two of their top point producers: Tarasenko (71) and Steen (62). The Pirates put Mercer on the 15-day disabled list Monday, a day after he was hurt in a collision with the Brewers’ Carlos Gomez in Milwaukee. Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison went on the disabled list July 7 because of a torn left thumb ligament and is expected to be out seven weeks.
