Auction Circuit Secret: Classic Pickups Are Still Affordable - PickupTrucks.com

While many would-be buyers focused on one-of Ferraris that went unsold at $23,000,000, there is a part of the collector car universe that is still affordable: classic pickup trucks. These trucks, to me anyway, fall into three distinct categories: pre-World War II trucks that have been restored to a high standard or are in original condition, post-WW II trucks in original or restored condition (mostly Chevrolets) and modified... Unlike the exotica that populate the high-end collector-car marketplace, you don't see many "barn finds" in the classic truck categories. Such trucks, if they were used on a real farm, were usually used until they would run no more and were left to rot in the fields. In the classic pickup marketplace one auction house dominates: Mecum Auctions. When you see pickups at other auctions like RM, Gooding & Co. and Bonhams, they are rare, usually prewar, pickups that end up selling for far more than mere mortal enthusiast collectors can afford. You will occasionally see an interesting postwar pickup at Russo and Steele, but it's usually a modified big-block truck owing to Russo and Steele's muscle-car roots. When you look at what Mecum Auctions sold in Monterey in August, you can see that early 1950s Chevrolet trucks, especially those in restored condition, sold well. Source: news.pickuptrucks.com

Maybe it’s the way the paint on the cars contrasted with the dusty green and the dusty concrete at the Alameda County fairgrounds in Pleasanton, Calif. , but suffice to say that the Goodguys show of more than 2,300 cars and trucks this past weekend (May 30-31, 2015) presented a wild palette of colors – conservative blues and blacks, the occasional purple or an astonishingly bright yellow. on some cars, flames raced fiercely down the hood and fenders, only to flame out behind the front doors. Taking a stock 1932 Ford coupe and turning it into something that still looks like a 1932 Ford coupe but is replete with modern engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, tilt steering wheel and the ability to get to 100 mph in a few... To be fair, there were plenty of cars at the show that were stock or near stock and they were there because they had been meticulously cared for and were worth showing off. On display were several 1939 or 1940 Fords that looked almost stock – until you checked the wheels and glanced under the hood. Many cars proudly displayed placards crediting each shop or supplier that had contributed to the final product – work on engines, paint, interior, front end, rear end, sound. On a 1937 Ford Slant Back Panel Delivery, a notation said, “flames by Manual’s Autobody of Vallejo, CA. ”. Hot Rod Power Tour charges through Champaign - Daily Illini

The Hot Rod Power Tour made a stop in Champaign on Sunday as a part of its seven-day, seven-city tour. Jeff Dahlin, publisher of Hot Rod magazine, said he was excited for Champaign to be added to the tour this year because of the large outdoor area that Parkland was able to provide. There was also a stage with live entertainment, free giveaways, a portable dynometer (a tool to show how much horsepower a vehicle has) and food trucks on the site. Spectators were able to check out the cars close-up, as most people lifted their hoods to show the car’s engine. Car owners shared stories about the work they put into their vehicles over the years. Dan Burrill, owner of a 1954 Ford F1 Pickup Truck, said what makes his truck special to him is the fact that he built it himself. When he got the truck, it had only the frame and cab intact – it didn’t even have doors on the cab. The Hot Rod Power Tour’s last stop in Champaign was in 2012 at the State Farm Center.
