Mercedes-Benz is keen to prove that its diesel powertrains are tough enough for the U. S. , and a run up Pikes Peak, with its thin mountain air and extreme road conditions, is meant to prove that the diesel is ready to take on the States. The car that will go on sale here next year is mostly identical to the Pikes Peak car, with the same 2. 1-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that mates with a seven-speed automatic transmission and 4Matic all-wheel drive.
