Study: Few vehicles equipped for easy child safety seat installation - News 10NBC

A highway safety group wants improvements in child safety seat restraints. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently evaluated more than 100 vehicles to see how easy it is to access the anchors that secure child safety seats and to determine how difficult it is to attach the seats to the anchors. Only three vehicles earned a good rating for ease of use. The three good ones are the BMW 5 series, the Mercedes Benz GL-Class and the Volkswagen Passat. What's known as latch has been required in vehicles sold since 2002. Lower anchors are located where the seat back meets the bottom seat cushion, attachments at the bottom of the child restraint connect to these. The top tether connects from the top of the child seat to an anchor located on the vehicle's rear shelf, seat back, floor, cargo area or ceiling. "Latch" stands for lower anchors and tethers for children and is intended to make it easier to install a child seat properly. The easier it is to use, the more likely parents are to install them properly. GOOD RATING. Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. 2014 Nissan Maxima. Chevrolet Cruze. Chevrolet Equinox. Chevrolet Impala. Chevrolet Malibu. Chevrolet Tahoe. Chevrolet Traverse. Chrysler 300. Chrysler Town & Country. GMC Yukon XL. Honda Civic. Source: www.whec.com
