With 330 changes, you’d think that the fifth-generation version of Mitsubishi’s popular and practical L200 pick-up would look considerably different to its predecessor. However, given that the Series 4 has outsold all of its rivals over the last nine years, it's not too much of a surprise to find that the Series 5 is pretty familiar in its overall appearance. Under the bonnet, in preparation for the arrival of emissions-based taxation for pick-ups, Mitsubishi has made its new all-aluminium 2. 4-litre turbodiesel as clean as possible. Variable valve timing and a variable-geometry turbocharger result in a CO2 figure of 173g/km of CO2 in this specification, superior to its next-cleanest rival the 192g/km Isuzu D-Max. An impressive new fuel consumption average of 42. 8mpg beats the Isuzu by 4. 1mpg, and both power and torque have climbed slightly, giving the L200 a useful and fun chunk of low-down urge. The turbocharged 2. 4-litre diesel produces its 178bhp peak at 3500rpm and moves the L200 down the road convincingly. Its gruffness may come as a surprise to anyone who’s driven a relatively modern diesel hatchback, but the noise does reduce when cruising.
