ABILENE — Abilene, Concordia and Norton are among seven finalists that have been selected for the site of a proposed Kansas transload shipping center. According to the Kansas Department of Transportation, transloading is the process of moving goods from one mode of transportation to another, or in this case, from truck to rail and rail to truck. By blending the benefits of shipping by rail and local/short haul trucking, a transload facility can provide more flexible and cost-effective solutions for customers who may not have local access to freight rail service. The Abilene site would be located just east of Abilene and is bordered by the Union Pacific and Santa Fe railroads, along with Jeep Road on the east. First Choice Support Services, a Salina-based organization specializing in Child and Adult Care Food Program reimbursement and nutrition related issues, has been recognized by the National CACFP Sponsors Association. The Child & Adult Care Food Program is a federal program that provides reimbursement for healthy meals and snacks served to children and adults in day care homes or institutions. Through CACFP, more than 3. 3 million children and 120,000 adults receive nutritious meals and snacks each day as part of the day care they receive. Source: www.salina.com
