East/West Xtra: Central Catholic senior's stock is rising - Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Central Catholic football standout Damar Hamlin has never been one to back down from a challenge, so when “The Opening” presented itself, Hamlin flew to it. Hamlin, who lives in McKees Rocks, made the 2,500-mile trip to Beaverton, Ore. , last week to compete in “The Opening,” an invitation-only event showcasing some of the nation’s top high school football players conducted at the Nike headquarters. Hamlin, an outstanding cornerback who was a Post-Gazette Fabulous 22 honoree as a junior, is ranked by Rivals as the No. 4 senior in Pennsylvania and No. 126 player nationally. “It was fun,” Hamlin said. “One thing I learned was that I can compete with the best players in the country. Hamlin was one of two WPIAL players participating, the other being Woodland Hills running back and Penn State commit Miles Sanders. Playing for Team Fly Rush, Hamlin said he played eight or nine games and helped his team advance to the semifinals. Hamlin was timed in the 40-yard dash and shuttle run, had his vertical jump measured, received instruction from coaches from around the country, and met a handful of NFL players. “That was great,” Hamlin said.
