Also up for 2016 is fuel efficiency during and beyond those first 53 miles. And the new 1. 5-liter gasoline engine will do 42 combined MPG when it kicks in to extend the Volt's cruising range to about 420 miles total. Coincidentally, that's also an improvement over the first generation's 380-mile total range. The second-generation Chevrolet Volt is shaping up to be a significant improvement over the first with its improved exterior design, less alienating cabin and -- most importantly -- the stated improvements to performance and efficiency.
