I first rode a Can-Am Spyder back in 2008, upon the introduction of the original Spyder RS. I grew up riding four-wheelers, so I quickly got used to the three-wheel Spyder’s cornering behavior — you move around on the seat to counterweight... I found it great fun, but motorcycle people seemed to hate it. If you’ve leaned into corners for thousands of miles, not leaning is just too weird. I figured it would be an interesting niche product for older riders, anyone with a balance problem or people like me — occasional motorcyclists who are comfortable seeing two front tires out behind the handlebars. Well, that niche model did OK. In May, the 100,000th Spyder rolled into someone’s garage, and BRP just expanded the lineup to include a fourth variant, the F3. This one represents Can-Am’s venture into the cruising segment, the largest one of all. Cruisers are popular because they’re versatile—comfortable and fast, but neither edging into full-bloat touring nor full-squid sport territory. The F3 starts at $19,499, but I rode the upgraded F3-S, which includes upgraded wheels and trim and stickers at $20,999.
