Sapakoff: Monte Lee's last stand at College of Charleston? - Charleston Post Courier

One of his first acts in office last year was offering head baseball coach Monte Lee a fat raise. Lee, last seen Saturday night almost pulling off another NCAA Tournament upset before the Cougars fell 3-2 to host Florida State, has to be one of the hottest coaching prospects in the parts of America that care about college baseball. When you beat teams like Florida and Auburn in the postseason, reach a Super Regional and come close to hosting a regional, athletic directors take notice. Even the College of Charleston’s NCAA Tournament losses — the last three by one-run — are thrillers. “It’s exciting when you can bring a team into an environment like this and the guys have the expectation of winning,” Lee said Saturday night. It’s an unbelievable atmosphere … but our guys feel like they can play with Florida State. I feel like I could take the College of Charleston and put them in any league and we could be very competitive. Here’s a fun stat if you like maroon and gold T-shirts: The Cougars have more NCAA Tournament wins (four) over the last two seasons than South Carolina (two) and Clemson (none) combined. Resumes, recruiting Lee, 38, is a graduate of Lugoff-Elgin High School who played at the College of Charleston and in the St. Louis Cardinals farm system. Source: www.postandcourier.com
