While driving down a Los Angeles freeway the other day, a first-generation Acura TSX in immaculate condition zoomed past me, and I realized that its crisp, clean, and contemporary design is now more than a decade old – even though it looks like... Not long afterward, Acura introduced “the grille,” which made its first appearance on the company’s MDX crossover SUV. This “plenum grille,” to use Acura’s official term, was a bold step for a luxury brand that often shied away from look-at-me frivolities. Then it showed up in grossly overindulgent format on a redesigned 2009 Acura TL. After that, Acura went off the rails a bit, putting this increasingly awkward-looking snout on vehicles never designed to accept it, like the RDX crossover and RL sedan. Today, the Acura grille is toned down, and Honda’s luxury division is fighting its way back to relevance. Cars still appear to be a challenge, but with the new 2015 Acura TLX the automaker takes a step in the right direction.
