High school reclassification: Bishop England, James Island among teams moving up - Charleston Post Courier
As expected, Bishop England was moved from Class AA to Class AAA in the new five-class system, and will compete in a region that includes Timberland, Manning, Lake Marion, Georgetown and Hanahan. Bishop England athletic director Paul Runey, though not entirely happy with his school’s new designation, does not anticipate his school appealing. Another local school that may appeal is James Island, which is moving from Class AAAA to AAAAA. James Island is the fifth-smallest school in AAAAA (38th overall) and is included in Region 8-AAAAA with Wando, Summerville, Ashley Ridge, Stratford, West Ashley, Goose Creek and Fort Dorchester. Wando, Summerville, Ashley Ridge and Fort Dorchester are among the top 10 largest schools in South Carolina. There was some thought last week that Class AAAAA would be limited to 32 or 36 schools, which would have placed James Island in AAAA. However, the proposal for AAAAA includes 42 schools, while AAAA has 41 schools. Colleton County and Cane Bay are now among the largest schools in Class AAAA. James Island (1,635) has 43 more students than Colleton County (1,592) and 68 more than Cane Bay (1,567). Joining Colleton County and Cane Bay in. Source: www.postandcourier.com
