The base X3 xDrive28i has an inline six-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower. Most critics found the base engine adequate, but greatly preferred the turbocharged engine in the xDrive35i that puts out 300 horsepower. With the base engine, fuel economy is 19/25 mpg city/highway, while the more powerful turbocharged model has a bit better mileage, at 19/26 mpg.
