Cheap summer fun: Miniature golf - Wisconsin Rapids Tribune

While often enjoyed as a fun, leisure activity, mini-golf can be competitive, with tournaments in the United States and Europe, according to the Pro Mini Golf website. Wisconsin Rapids is home to three mini-golf courses, each offering different obstacles and postgame treats, including ice cream. Reuben Newman built Newman's First Street Mini-Golf in 1972. Newman died in 2010, and his son, Jim, who retired from Lincoln High School in 2010, now owns and maintains the course. The course offers obstacles that include a spinning windmill, bumper pool and, like most courses, water hazards. Due to changing ownership, the history of White Sands Mini Golf at Lake Wazeecha is not clear, but the course may date to the 1960s. Current owner Michelle Bredl said she always wanted to own her own business, so she decided to buy it. She likes... The third course, Clancy's, offers not just a mini-golf course, but a driving range and other recreation. The course is accented with green shrubs and the bright green carpet familiar to most mini courses. As children — and without knowing each other — Eben and Lacey Peck rode their bikes to Newman's First Street Miniature Golf from their respective neighborhoods in Grand Rapids and Wisconsin Rapids.
