Troy club hosts Meadow Brook garden gala - C&G Newspapers
When the Troy Garden Club, a local branch of the Woman’s National Farm & Garden Association, was asked to host the national group’s yearly International Tea Aug. She hosted an International Tea at Meadow Brook in the ’60s. “Meadow Brook is a National Historic Landmark and a Proven Winners Signature Garden, one of only a handful in the U. Other Proven Winners Signature Gardens include the Hotel Iroquois on Mackinac Island, the Kentucky and Illinois governors mansions, and the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens in Buffalo, New York. The International Tea raises funds for the International 4-H Youth Exchange program, through which high school age youths can study abroad. Schwark said that two students, one from Kyrgyzstan and one from the Ukraine, planned to attend with 4-H representatives as participants in the Michigan State International 4-H Youth Exchange Program. “Russell Mawby, chairman emeritus of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, was one of the first students who went abroad (with the International 4-H Youth Exchange Program) in the late ’60s,” Schwark said.
