The cuts announced Thursday in Washington would reduce Army personnel in Texas by 4,898 by 2017. Fort Hood would lose 9 percent of its personnel. Currently, Fort Hood has about 39,000 troops, officials said, and that number will be closer to the authorized 37,475 by Oct. The latest cuts will lower Fort Hood’s authorized number of troops to 34,125 by October 2017, according to the Army. “III Corps and Fort Hood are aware of the Army’s announcement (last week) regarding restructuring and reduction,” Col. “As announced by the Army, Fort Hood is scheduled to lose 3,350 soldiers by the end of 2017. We are continuing to evaluate the announcement to determine the overall impact on Fort Hood and III Corps. “As Army leaders have stated many times over the past months, the Army must get smaller,” Garver said. These are not decisions the Army wanted to make but are decisions the Army felt it had to make due to the current fiscal environment. The Army announced the cuts Thursday, the same day a separate federal commission that is tasked with reporting to Congress on how the Army should be restructured toured Fort Hood.
