Two injured in alleged DUI crash near Penfield - Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette

PENFIELD - A Potomac man remained hospitalized Saturday morning in critical condition with injuries he received in a single-car crash when his apparently drunken friend ran off the road. Jeff Vercler said Gabriel Pearman, 22, of Potomac, was a passenger in a car driven by Adrian Paz-Williams, 22, of Gifford. Just after 1:30 a. m. Saturday, two young women saw the crashed car on County Road 2700 E near 2850 N. That's about a half-mile south of Penfield. Deputies determined the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier was headed north on 2700 E when Paz-Williams left the road to the west, went down in a ditch and struck a culvert. Vercler said it was unclear when the crash happened but he said the road is heavily traveled. Paz-Williams and Pearman had to be cut out of the car. Pearman was airlifted to Carle Foundation Hospital while Paz-Williams was taken there by ambulance. Vercler said tests done on Paz-Williams at the hospital revealed he had a blood-alcohol content of about 0. 28 percent, more than three times the limit for a motorist to be presumed intoxicated under Illinois law. He was issued tickets at the hospital for driving under the influence and improper lane usage, Vercler said.
