WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 218,000 2004-'08 Chevrolet Aveo cars for a fire risk linked to the daytime running lights module, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. GM is also recalling 214 Chevrolet Optra cars for a fire risk because a headlight switch or daytime running light module could melt, according to NHTSA. "In the affected vehicles, there may be heat generated within the DRL module located in the center console in the instrument panel, which could melt the DRL module," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem with the Aveo. In the case of the Optra, NHTSA said: "If the heat generated within the headlamp switch and DRL module located on the left side of the steering column melts the headlamp switch or DRL module, it increases the risk of a vehicle fire. "GM is aware of some fires in these vehicles but no injuries or fatalities," wrote GM spokesman Alan Adler in an e-mailed message to Edmunds on Wednesday. Adler said these two recalls are part of 29 safety and non-compliance recalls GM has reported to NHTSA so far this year. Source: www.edmunds.com
