Rob Portman died Saturday after being shot in Washington D. C. Matt Shlonsky, 23, was shot about 5 p. m. near the Shaw-Howard University Metro Station, according to Washington D. C. police. Police found Shlonsky unconscious with a gunshot wound. Investigators there are looking for a Chrysler 300 that drove away from the area shortly after gunfire erupted. The Washington Post reported that there is no indication that Shlonsky was the intended target of the gunfire. Shlonsky graduated from Brush High School in 2010 and American University in 2014, where he was on the honor roll. He worked as an intern in Portman's Washington D. C. office from January to May 2013. "This is a terrible tragedy," Portman said in a statement. At Brush, Shlonsky played hockey. Shlonsky also played tuba in the school's marching band. Shlonsky and a handful of other area students were given special recognition for their leadership in raising awareness for teen dating violence. Shlonsky was among the throngs who celebrated outside the White House after the death of Osama Bin Laden in 2011, his parents told the Plain Dealer Publishing Co. at the time.
