Indy legend Rick Mears wowed by 'incredible' Dream Cruise - Detroit Free Press

Rick Mears has done it all as a race car driver, including a record-equaling four victories in the Indianapolis 500. He arguably is the greatest IndyCar driver on ovals of all time, winning the Indy 500 in 1979, 1984, 1988 and 1991, and IndyCar... He is one of Roger Penske's closest confidants, but he had never been to Detroit's Woodward Dream Cruise until Thursday, where The Captain led a caravan of 16 official Indy 500 pace cars to commemorate his record 16 wins as team owner in the Indy... "This is incredible, it really is, to see all these cars in one spot," Mears said of the collection of Indy pace cars and the huge number of muscle cars in the area. Mears made driving at more than 200 m. p. h. look like a breeze. Mears always knew when to make his move, when to make that mad dash to the checkered flag in the closing laps at Indy. Had he driven longer, he might have won five or six Indy 500s. "I woke up one morning and thought to myself, it's over, I don't want to race anymore," Mears said. On Thursday, Mears was just cruising, and he liked it. "This is a cool deal," Mears said. Source: www.freep.com
