Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn Edition – Driving Report - Sports Car Digest

Ram is Chrysler’s newest brand that focuses on trucks. Ram isn’t exactly new, though, is it. Their models are ones we are all quite familiar with already, so it’s pretty much a case of Chrysler just taking away the “Dodge” part of the name. In the case of our test vehicle, though, equipped with the quite expensive and lavish Laramie Longhorn package, there was nothing stale or tired about it. In fact, even just driving it around town made us almost want to start Pickup Truck Digest. Other than some badges the Laramie Longhorn version doesn’t look much different from a normal 1500, and there’s nothing wrong with that, really. Pickups that try too hard to be flashy (Chrysler’s own Dodge Ram Rumble Bee from a few years back comes to mind) tend to look kind of over the top, so the relatively restrained looks on this particular truck were fine by us. One thing of note on... They’re not cavernous, but they are really handy for small and medium-sized stuff like hunting and fishing gear, beverages or hedgehogs, making you wonder why all trucks don’t have these. You know who simply loves Texas. Well, feral swine to be more specific. Oh, and pickup-truck drivers, of course. They also love Texas. Truckmakers can’t seem to agree on exactly what proportion of pickups sold is delivered in Texas, except to acknowledge that it’s a truck-load of ’em. Chevrolet estimates that one in six new full-size pickups is sold in Texas, while Ram reckons... Either way, those two big players, along with Ford, are so fond of Texas shoppers that each makes some variety of Texas-specific edition of its truck. According to a 2012 study by Texas A&M University, the feral hog population in the state is somewhere between 1. 8 million and 3. 4 million. These crafty omnivores are highly adaptable descendants of escaped domesticated pigs, of wild Eurasian boars, and of a hybrid of multiple sources of swine stock. sows begin breeding at six to eight months of age and have two litters of about four to eight piglets every 12 to 15 months. The country’s population of pickups has exploded during roughly the same 30-year time period as the wild pigs’ boom. But in contrast to the wild swine, this species has become more and more domesticated with each generation, to the point that the current litter of trucks has an almost minivan-like obsession with family-friendly doodads. designers have created a new brand of rugged luxury with the ’13 Ram 1500 Laramie Longhorn edition, which is well worth the $55,390 sticker price for the 4x4 crew cab we tested. The Laramie Longhorn is one of few entries in this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Interiors competition to receive near-perfect scores cross the board, with one juror commenting that this is what a truck would look like “if Bentley made pickups. There aren’t enough adjectives to describe how so many styles coalesce in the 1500 Laramie Longhorn, with one juror calling the package “manly, stylish and comfortable,” all at once. A cynic might grouse that a pickup stickering north of $55,000 darned well should have a spectacular interior, and that base trucks should be evaluated instead. Besides, premium pickups are selling well, and auto makers are crazy not to give buyers exactly what they want.
