Notes From The Driveway: 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S - Motor Authority

It's not very often that something as special as the 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT S comes rolling into my driveway, so I was excited to spend the last week piloting Mercedes' new Porsche 911 fighter. Prior to my test drive, I had only been behind the wheel for one glorious lap of the Road America road course, but this time I was able to put 342 miles on the odometer and learn what it's like to live with this beautiful coupe. Here are some things I learned during my week with my $146,330 test car. Chicago's straight-line and pockmarked streets are where driving fun goes to die. I tried the GT S in all of these places and found that, well, the car's prodigious power and sharp handling have far more bandwidth than I am comfortable using on the street. I hit 138 mph while blasting through Road America's Kettle Bottoms on the way to Canada Corner. It looks like it should be carrying a spiked club, but offers cosseting luxury inside, and an exclusive feature list. AMG, no risk, has Porsche in its sights with the new GT S… let the track hostilities begin. Engine/transmission: 3,982cc direct injection, bi-turbo V8 / AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7-speed transmission. Fuel consumption: (claimed) 9. 1 l/100km | (tested) 11. 9 l/100km. OVERVIEW To look at the AMG GT S is like seeing sin – dark, brooding, filled with menace – a good kid gone off the rails, and now “mad, bad, and dangerous to know”. Immensely powerful, every stamp on the accelerator accompanied by a thunderous volley from the dual-pipe rear, Mercedes’ new AMG GT S rules the road like an apex predator. Strange then that it is so easy to drive, so accommodating, and – though it baulks and bumps and strains when poking through town, and that bonnet is so absurdly long – so light and manoeuvrable. Well, first of all, from the styling (look at that rear end), to the performance, to the pricing, the AMG GT S is ever-so-clearly intended to take on the benchmark of the GT class, the Porsche 911. Utterly different from the 911 in its layout and specification, the AMG GT S nonetheless takes to the road and the track much like its nemesis. Rather than start with a blank sheet for the car that supplants the SLS AMG GT, the team at AMG used much of the previous car’s structure for the AMG GT S (and, coming in 2016, the slightly less powerful AMG GT). The passenger cell is essentially... With such a similar starting point, you might think the AMG GT is just a warmed-over version of the SLS.
