Pedestrian killed on Highway 385 Sunday morning - KPLC-TV

One man is dead and another has been charged with vehicular homicide after a vehicle struck a pedestrian near Lake Charles early this morning. Just after 4 a. m. Sunday, Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian on Louisiana Highway 385 south of Lake Charles in Calcasieu Parish. The preliminary investigation revealed a 1999 Mazda pickup driven by 37-year-old Marcus Devin Pettifield of Lake Arthur was traveling south on LA 385 when a pedestrian attempted to cross the highway in front of him. The pedestrian, 22-year-old Devin Lee Olmos of San Antonio, Texas, was struck by the pickup truck and was transported to a Lake Charles hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. Impairment on the part of Olmos is suspected to be a factor in this crash. Pettifield was charged with vehicular homicide as well as driving under suspension and was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. In 2013, 63 percent of people who died in crashes investigated by Troop D were killed by an impaired driver. To report impaired drivers, motorists are encouraged to notify State Police by dialing *LSP (*577) from their cell phone or to contact local authorities by dialing 911. Troop D has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 19 fatalities this year. Source: www.kplctv.com

KPD id's suspect caught on camera stealing ATV - WBIR-TV

(WBIR-Knoxville) A man that Knoxville Police called a "one man crime spree" is now facing a number of charges. According to KPD, James Tony Burkhart,42, has racked up 18 outstanding warrants for theft and burglary since March 2014. He was finally captured on Thursday after he fled from a traffic stop in a stolen truck. Burkhart was not injured in the wreck, and neither was the woman with him, Nikki Sutton, 26. The search for Burkhart intensified after investigators recognized him in surveillance video stealing at ATV out of a Fountain City driveway. Knoxville Police tracked down and arrested a couple they believe were caught on camera stealing at ATV out of a Fountain City driveway. Investigators identified James Tony Burkhart, 42, from that surveillance video and have been tracking him ever since. The video was captured on a home surveillance camera at a Fountain City home on Sunday evening. Knoxville Police believe that suspect is James Tony Burkhart, 42. There are at least 14 warrants out for his arrest in Knoxville for theft, attempted theft, burglary, and drug charges. Burkhart has used at least two stolen vehicles, a white Dodge Ram pickup and. Mazda adds 540000 vehicles to Takata air bag recall - KWCH

DETROIT (AP) - Mazda is recalling nearly 540,000 cars and pickup trucks in the U. S. and Canada to fix air bags that potentially can explode with too much force. The automaker says in documents posted by safety regulators that it's recalling nearly 503,000 cars to fix driver's air bags and another 35,000 small pickup trucks to fix passenger air bags. Affected models with faulty driver's air bags include the 2003-2008 Mazda 6, 2006 to 2007 MazdaSpeed 6 and the 2004 to 2008 RX-8. The company also is recalling 2004 to 2006 B-Series pickup trucks to replace passenger air bag inflators. Last month Takata agreed to recall 33. 8 million of the devices, making it the largest auto recall in U. S. history. Source: www.kwch.com
