The 2012 IPL G Coupe represents many things to Infiniti. For starters, the Infiniti Performance Line (IPL) is the automaker's first dabble into the kind of performance premium sub-branding that makes German luxury cars bearing an "//M" or "AMG" badge so alluring. Stepping up to the IPL G Coupe really only improves the G37 Sport in two measurable ways: it goes faster and it handles more sharply. We start our trip around the upgraded IPL G Coupe in the engine bay where, aside from the chrome IPL badge on the engine cover, not much is different from a standard G37. Yep, that's the same 3. 7-liter VQ37VHR engine. However, what you don't see is that thanks to a few ECU tweaks, Infiniti's engineers have managed to squeeze an extra 18 horsepower out of this mill. That torque number is only up by a scant 6 pound-feet, which may explain why the IPL G Coupe doesn't feel madly different from a G37 Sport. Zero to 60 takes about 5. 0 seconds, just 0. 2 seconds faster than the non-IPL model, which really makes any drag race between the two more of a driver's race than a hardware comparison. You'd really have to approach triple-digit speeds to feel any real difference between this and your neighbor's G37S. You wouldn't need to do more than idle the engine to hear the difference. Its version of BMW’s M or Mercedes-Benz’s AMG is called Infiniti Performance Line, or IPL. The first vehicle to get the IPL treatment will be the G coupe , but Infiniti promises that eventually IPL will spread to a number of cars in the lineup. Likely IPL candidates are the M and G sedans, and maybe even the FX. We’d call chances slim that there will ever be an IPL version of the QX56 full-size SUV. Under the hood of the IPL G Coupe is a 348-hp version of Infiniti’s high-revving 3. 7-liter V-6. Regular G37 coupes get by with 330. In terms of output, the IPL engine is nearly identical to the 350-hp V-6 from Nissan’s NISMO 370Z —both engines... A true dual exhaust is fitted (each cylinder bank gets its own exhaust path) that Infiniti claims reduces back pressure some 30 percent over the normal Y-pipe configuration. As in the regular G coupe, buyers can choose a six-speed manual—with a short-throw shifter in the IPL—or a seven-speed automatic with paddle shifters mounted to the steering column. A mechanical-type limited-slip differential is also included in the deal, as are what Infiniti calls “sport brakes” consisting of four-piston calipers in the front and two-piston binders in back. The IPL differs from good old Gs in that it has a more aggressive body kit, 19-inch Y-spoke wheels, and most important, a 3. 7-liter V-6 making 348 hp and 276 lb-ft of torque—increases of 18 and 6, respectively, so not quite the overhaul that goes... You can get an IPL in any color you want, so long as it’s black or gray. The gray IPL we drove had contrasting purple stitching on its black leather seats and steering wheel. The IPL’s 18 extra hp give it only the slimmest straight-line edge, with the car posting a 0-to-60-mph time of 5. 4 seconds, actually 0. 1 second behind the best time we’ve seen from a G37S coupe. Both post identical 13. 9-second quarter-mile times, and the IPL is quicker to 90 mph and every 10-mph increment thereafter—although only barely. Driver comfort depends greatly on driver height. Not that it’s difficult to manipulate the IPL’s three pedals with two feet, but we were surprised the IPL doesn’t get Nissan’s crafty SynchroRev Match downshift program, which makes heroes of heel-and-toe amateurs.
