Ford aluminum body pickup gets mixed results in crash test - CNNMoney

The new all-aluminum Ford F-150 crew cab pickup did well in a tough new crash test, but the slightly smaller SuperCab version of the truck earned poor marks. F-150 SuperCrew version of the truck has additional structures that helped protect the passenger compartment during the test. The Insurance Institute was originally going to test only the larger SuperCrew truck because that's the most popular version of the truck. After learning of the structural differences from other versions of the truck, though, the Institute decided to test the smaller version as well. In the future, the Institute will test more than one version of large pickups like the F-150, the Institute said. When this crash test was introduced in 2012, the new F-150 was already far into development, Ford spokesman Mike Levine said. Engineers weren't able to design the extra front-end protective measures quickly enough for all versions, he said, so a decision was made to add them first to the four-door SuperCrew truck, which accounts for a large majority of F-150 sales. The protective measures will be part of the vehicle's 2016 design. Source: money.cnn.com

Ford Chooses Nigeria to Assemble Pickup Truck - IndustryWeek

Ford Motor Co's (IW 500/6) announcement on August 11 that it will assemble its Ranger pickup in Nigeria will make that country the first African country outside of South Africa to produce Ford products. “Assembling Ford Ranger trucks in Africa’s largest economy is an important milestone in our Middle East and Africa growth plan,” said Jim Benintende, president of Ford Middle East & Africa. Ford is partnering with Ford dealer group Coscharis Motors Limited on the project. Ford will assemble the vehicles at a semi-knockdown level, using body parts and components imported from South Africa for the new Ranger. The new assembly plant in Ikeja will create approximately 180 jobs directly and indirectly, and has the capacity to assemble up to 5,000 units annually. “Nigeria is a priority market for us in Sub-Saharan Africa and today’s announcement will allow us to better serve our customers both from a retail point of view, and in terms of vehicle and parts availability,” said Jeff Nemeth CEO of Ford Motor... | The office has all the trappings of a high-tech startup. Welcome to the Palo Alto home of the Ford Motor Co. , six miles from the headquarters of Google. Meanwhile, in a squat, industrial building in suburban Detroit, a short drive from Ford's headquarters, workers are busy building a small fleet of driverless cars. The convergence of cars and computers is blurring the traditional geographical boundaries of both industries. Silicon Valley is dotted with research labs opened by automakers and suppliers, who are racing to develop high-tech infotainment systems and autonomous cars. Tech companies — looking to grow and sensing an industry that's ripe for disruption — are heading to Detroit to better understand the auto industry and get their software embedded into cars. The result is both heated competition and unprecedented cooperation between two industries that rarely spoke to each other five years ago. We're educating both sides," says Niall Berkerey, who runs the Detroit office of Telenav, a Sunnyvale, California-based firm that makes navigation software. For years the fast-paced tech industry showed little respect for the plodding car industry. Google and Palo Alto-based Tesla, with its high-tech electric sedans, helped change that.
