After a day spent in the Texas Hill Country driving and riding in the full range of 2015 F-150 trucks, the most striking thing about the world's first aluminum-bodied mainstream pickup is how unremarkable its aluminumness is. It doesn't crumple... Studying those figures, you notice that power and torque ratings may not lead the class, and the gross-vehicle-weight ratings are similar, but the payload and towing stats favor the Fords by roughly the difference in curb weights. Also, when you look at pound-feet-per-pound of curb weight, the new 2. 7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 edges out the Silverado 5. 3-liter V-8, both Ram's 3. 0-liter EcoDiesel and 5. 7-liter Hemi by a few percentage points and the 3. 5-liter... To demonstrate all of this, Ford set up a little 400-foot drag race where we could sample said competitors back-to-back (all four-door cabs with rear- or four-wheel drive matched across like competitors), and indeed the top result for the 3.... Understand, first of all, the contrast in vehicles that we in the autojournalism profession sometimes face: I got out of the cramped cockpit of the Ford Mustang GT , with its athletic performance and clambered directly into the cavernous interior... Perhaps that change is why I felt the Ford F-150 needed 40 acres to turn around. The Mustang, while not really a “small” car, per se, had a decent turning radius and was fairly easy to park in the day-to-day slog. The Ford F-150 felt like docking a houseboat by comparison. And after a week at the Mustang’s relatively quick-ratio steering wheel, it took me a couple of days to get used to the much slower steering rate of the Ford F-150. In sum, my initial impression was not one of lightness. As the week wore on, however, I became more used to the Ford F-150’s size.
