The 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid gave us a strong sense of deja vu. We read the accolades accorded to the gas-only version, the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, after its launch late last year, which reminded us of the good press received by the Saturn... And the Malibu Hybrid, with its belt alternator starter (BAS) hybrid system, reminded us of the mild hybrid system of the Saturn Aura Green Line. It seems that GM pioneered a good car launch story with the Aura and chose to repeat it with the Malibu this year. From a tech standpoint, the Malibu Hybrid doesn't stand out. The Malibu Hybrid works primarily as a value proposition, giving you a lot of car for relatively little money. We spent our first few days with the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid driving it around the traffic-choked streets of San Francisco. On the highway, the Malibu Hybrid is supposed to get 32 mpg. Strong hybrid systems, such as that found in the Toyota Highlander Hybrid , get better fuel economy in the city than on the highway, but the BAS system in the Malibu Hybrid doesn't produce that type of efficiency. GM Invests $174 Million in 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Production - Motor Trend

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, which goes into production later this year, is larger and more efficient than the outgoing version. It will be equipped with a base 1. 5-liter turbo four with a six-speed automatic and a 37-mpg hwy rating, or a 2. 0-liter turbo four with an eight-speed automatic. A Malibu Hybrid is also on its way, and it should achieve a fuel economy rating of over 45 mpg. On topic this Malibu is definitely an improvement over the previous one. I had an 11 in LTZ trim as a rental for a month a couple years ago. I also agree, it is still the best looking since 2008, but this new one is an improvement over the current model. That $174 mil (not $120) is just to get Fairfax plant ready to assemble the new Malibu. GM invested well over a billion into the new Malibu - taking into account the cost of a new platform, new engines, new transmission, new hybrid system, etc. (of course, these costs are spread out among several models which will make use of the various components). It will be the lightest most fuel efficient midsized on the market. So the maintenance costs are among the lowest in the industry. A mild hybrid variant of the Malibu was added to the lineup, and it went on to win numerous environmental awards, including a Pyramid Award for Environmental Initiatives from the Canadian Automobile Association. This version of the Malibu combines power from a fuel-efficient ECOTEC four-cylinder engine with electric assist from a motor and battery system.
