The new CT6 is bigger, roomier, more efficient and more impressive than the Cadillac XTS that occupies the same basic segment, with the main exception being that the XTS is front wheel drive while the new CT6 is rear wheel drive. Cadillac’s most popular models are the rear drive ATS and CTS, so with the shift of luxury interest tastes to a proper rear wheel drive models, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to hear that the gorgeous new CT6 is essentially replacing the XTS. The Cadillac XTS really is a lovely piece of luxury machinery, but the front drive architecture (which includes optional all-wheel drive) just doesn’t offer the kind of driving dynamics that you get from the ATS, the CTS or any of the key... WASHINGTON — General Motors is recalling 132,921 2013-'15 Cadillac XTS cars and 2014-'15 Chevrolet Impala cars in the U. S. because of a parking-brake flaw that could lead to "excessive brake heat that may result in a fire," according to the... "In the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract, causing the brake pads to stay partially engaged," said NHTSA in its summary of the problem. "Brake pads that remain partially engaged with the rotors may cause excessive brake heat that may result in a fire. The problem has been attributed to the electronic parking brake software that can prevent the arm that controls the parking brake from traveling far enough when the parking brake is disengaged. Actually, in the case of the 2013 Cadillac XTS sedan, it’s more like dead car, er, rolling. A proper Cadillac flagship riding on a new, premium rear-wheel-drive platform should eventually replace it. Why go through the effort of developing a car with a near-term death sentence. The XTS positively drips with the geriatric-express stigma inherent in a V-6–powered, front-drive-based luxobarge, and that’s no bad thing for Cadillac’s bottom line. This car is intended to hold over DTS owners to finance Caddy’s eventual move to a BMW-like rear-drive-based car lineup. We’ve already tested the all-wheel-drive XTS and pitted one against a Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed (in a bang-for-buck-focused comparison test ), but this is our first chance to strap our test gear to the front-wheel-drive model. As a bonus, ditching the rear-end driveline gear saves some pounds—182, to be exact—plus some parts that take energy to move, improving fuel economy and saving buyers $2225 relative to AWD XTS Luxury, Premium, and Platinum models.
